3.0 2nd gen - slip or chatter on acceleration
i found this statement searching for leaking transfer case options:
it came from this website
i believe i have this problem.... i've had this leaking tranfer case and have been experiencing chatter on acceleration and rattling at cruising speeds 60mph+... anybody know anymore on this issue?
i'm still looking into how to have my leaking transfer case fixed.... i'm just a weekend mechanic (oil changes, simple stuff)..... any recommendations for a shop in san diego to fix it?.....
please help.... this has been bothering me for awhile now.... i'm close to getting rid of my 4runner if i can't figure out how to get this resolved....
thanks for any input....

Code:
A leaking or damaged direct clutch in the transfer case causes a slip or chatter on acceleration. (1990-92)

Don't know anything about the clutch thing, but if your leak is from one of the output flanges it's an easy fix. Just unbolt the drive shaft, remove the large nut on the flange, pull it out and replace the seal. Then put everything back.

You'd get rid of your 4Runner because it needs a repair?
Here's a thought - there are a lot of guys changing over to 5 speeds, a good used auto transmission (the transfer case is integral) should be easy to find cheap.

to flamed - sorry.... let me clarify, i wrote the statement about getting rid of my 4runner in haste.... i have these rattles with low vibrational humming coming from front, center console gearshift area (constant during cruising speeds 65mph regardless of acceleration, cruising, or deceleration).... in addition i get these shudders or i guess chatter during light acceleration/decceleration 10-30mph kinda which comes from the rear, center console.
so far, i have had the u-joints and driveshaft replaced ~2years ago.... and also the rear output flange? was tightened..... the tightening of the rear output flange was the most dramatic in decreasing the rattles (reduced more that 50%).... i even took apart the whole center console gear shift assembly to tighten down everything .....but there are still rattles and even though i know i'm driving a 4x4 truck and not a quiet lexus sedan, the rattles bother me nevertheless.... my best deduction, is that it is driveline related... and today i saw the reference to the transfer case causing shudders so that is why im posting...
basically, i keep my truck in good repair and condition, as you can see by my pics (link above) .... and i can't seem to get to the bottom of this rattling issue.... i am the original owner, so i remember how it was to drive this 80mph+ rattle free, but with the 65mph rattles and shudders during light acceleration.... maybe this helps you understand my position.....
so please help.... what is the best course of action in my case?....
thanks everyone.... i get so much information from here
