2nd Gen Tow Hook Question/Help

Hey guys,

Alright, with the upcoming SE4RJ, I'd like to throw another tow hook on the front of my rig. I've already got the one on the passenger side, but all I have is the transportation/tie-down loop on the drivers side. Is there a direct replacement hook out there that has the same bolt pattern (and bolt threading) that matches right up to where the transportation/tie-down loop currently is?

Thanks for the help guys - I really hope I'm going to be able to make it to the jam in a few weeks.

Cody

Head to the junkyard, take a hook off another 4runner, save the bolts (the tie-down bolts are different) and install it on the other side.
I have 2 on the front now, it's much better

Good idea. So, you just re-used the bolts from the tie-down when you installed the tow hook on the other side?

I got a hook and bolts if you want for a little $

Standard "parts store hooks work too"

No, those get chucked.
You need the bolts for the hook. The tie-down bolts won't work.

Alright, got ya. So when I get another hook from a junkyard rig, just use the bolts for that hook. So the bolts for the tow hook are the same diameter/thread pitch as the bolts for the tie-down? That's nice that they are interchangable.

About that tow hook .... this is kinda unrelated to the thread, but what the heck. Would it be safe to latch a come-along onto that hook to try to straighten some metal out or is that just asking for trouble?

That would be fine. If your hook is not damaged there aint' a come along around that could yank it off. The attachment of the cable to the bent metal and holding the bent metal still is up in the air though, you just have to make sure everything is in good working order and have a little common sense. People out on the trail straighten out bent tie-rods and traction bars all the time doing just what you described. Hope it helps.
