I'm also working on one, using the B&M shift kit for the Tacoma mated with a custom spacer. This would be an all new shifter so you don't have to send in your old shifter to get modified. It will cost more than Marlin's kit, but no down-time. I also have short throws for the transfer case:

Yes, W56 will be the first version, since that is what tranny I have in my '85.

Cool. Got a Marlin short throw tranny shifter in my '86 and absolutely love it. Been thinking about getting one for my '85 too but guess I'll wait and check out Roger B's version first.

i thought the short shifter from marlin was for the tcase? how long is the downtime for it anyways..or how much is it just to get a new shifter

The only downtime on my truck was removing the stock shifter and installing the new shifter. Had to send my stock shifter back to Marlin for a core.

what tranny does my truck have? the vin tag says w46, however that tranny is a 4 speed, and the tranny in my truck is a 5 speed, also im 4x2..... would that make a difference in if i can have a short shifter made for me?

i know the shifter sticks are largely interchangeable between most L, G and W trannies. however the shifter bases are different and i think that's where the main problem of building a short shifter comes up. you have to modify the base to get less of a throw angle.

I'll just be making a spacer to go under the existing shifter base for my short shifter, same as I do for the t-case short thow kits I have been making for a few years now:



Ony difference is that the design of the tranny shifter does not lend itself to a bolt-on extension like the t-case does.

BTW: I can make a bolt on spacer for the tranny, only raises the shifters pivot point but does not change the throw. This could make a good solution for changing a 3" body lifted shifter into effectively a 2" lifted shifter. I actually stumbled upon this idea while trying to make a shorter throw.
