180k Maintenance...How Much Should this Cost Me?

Here's what I want done at my 180k maintenance. Keep in mind I have all the parts so this should be just labor....

Replace the drive belts
Replace the timing belt
Replace the water pump
Drain and refill the coolant
Drain and refill the transmission
Fix my powered antenna (if I can't do so myself)

I called the dealer the other day and they gave me an estimate of over $700!!!!! I was floored. The local Firestone was about $150 cheaper, but their price did not include a tranny fluid change because they won't do it on high mileage vehicles for liability sake.

I've gone about 90k since I had the belts changed. Can I go longer? That's the biggest driver of the cost here. I'll also have to remove my Piaa 520s and brush guard in order for them to do this, or risk them trying to do it and charging me for another two hours worth of labor. At a minimum I want to do the coolant and transmission but I did not change the water pump at 90k when the belts were replaced the first time. It scares me to drive on belts with this many miles but my wife went almost 130k before finally listening to me and getting her's replaced.

Would you guys do what is listed above (more or less) and would you pay that much for it? I'm going to have to call around some more but I've got a feeling that all of the dealers are going to be EXPENSIVE!!! Thanks.

Matt

You really need to replace your timing belt that breaks and there goes your engine, so if you think 700.00 is expensive price a engine!!!

You may be able to save a little by doing the drive belts (just have the mechanic put the old ones back on) and tranny drain yourself. They are quoting about the same up here ($600/$650)

Get it done at the dealer and pay the money. If something goes wrong you won't have to haggle getting it fixed later.

Assuming you have the 3.4 motor, it is non interference. If your timing belt breaks, you will be dead on the side of the road, but no damage to the engine. You mentioned you had the parts and were going to have the dealer do the work? Very rare for a dealer to agree to put in parts that they dont source (both for profit and warranty reasons). The quote you mentioned for 700$ is about average (at least around here) for the dealer to do the belt and water pump including parts. Maybe I am misunderstanding your post, or maybe the dealer did not get that you wanted to provide parts. I also dont understand why you would have to remove your brush guard and lights?

You can fix the power antenna yourself. It's not that hard, and there are plenty of write ups on it. Ask a jiffy lube or something for a price quote on the transmission and coolant flush. You should use the dealer for the water pump and timing belt. Look for coupons, though. The Texas dealers send me coupons all the time. Toyota of Irving has service coupons on their website.

How about replacing your idler pulleys and timing belt tensioner?

To piggyback on what lexustech said, I too work at a Lexus dealership and we see a lot of cars come in with problems stemming from other shops not doing proper work. I do think there are good shops out there. If you can find a good mechanic you can save tons on labor, especially since your 4Runner is out of warranty. At the very least, make sure you get Toyota parts when your truck is worked on.

Pathetic...That's all I can say. Receivers dropping balls left and right, penalties penalites and more penalties, a starting QB who was inaccurate as hell and when he was accurate...the receivers dropped it, more injuries, etc. etc. We played like crap and deserved to lose. We should have lost to Florida but hung tough and pulled it out. I looked at the schedule and saw a four game stretch of Florida, Kentucky, Auburn, and Alabama and thought 3-1 through that would be great. I just hope we take care of business in the next two. Should be an interesting visit to T-town in three weeks!

GEAUX TIGERS!!!! Just one loss....in '03 when we won the championship we lost mid season to Florida and came back. No reason why we can't now!!!
