Hi from Nicaragua,

I got the parts needed for this upgrade last week and myself and my mechanic buddy did the install in 2.5 hours on my 2001 4Runner SR5. Here's the best how to guide I've seen as of yet on the upgrade - http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51597

I had lots of problems with the hills here in Central America and going through brake pads (and dealing with super hot brakes) with the stock brakes.

Items of note:
- My dust shields only required very minor bending back to accommodate the new S13WE rotors.
- The author of the link above had to do some tweaking to his banjo bolts to get the mod to work. I did not have to do a thing to mine, they fit perfectly.
- Clearance on the 16" wheels was fine and I am almost wondering if I should have done the 231mm caliper??

Congrats, glad your swap went well. For me the worst part was bleeding the brakes.

 

That is a pretty good write up. I've been considering this upgrade since my brakes have never been done. I just get kind of discouraged from threads that are 15 pages long. Has anybody had issues with clearence and aftermarkets? I really think this would help with the 285's.

 

I did it and it took me about 2 hours to install them and i didn't have to bend the dust shields or do any modding at all, i could go back to stock tomorrow if i wanted.

The braking power is a little more but my brembo rotors warped during the brake in and have just gotten worse so i don't really get any help out of it, i am going ot get some differnt rotors when i replace them next time.

I am also woundering about the 231mm upgrade, i had plenty of room left as well and wounder what they would do....

 

i did the 231mm upgrade fit my stock 16" 5 spoke wheels no grinding. tin sniped a 1/4" off the top and bottom where the caliper fits into the dust shield. I would think that it is foolish to only do the 199mm calipers when the 231 are a better setup.

 

Had i know this when i did mine i would have! what i had heard at the time was that no one had tried the 231mm yet and i was not going to try it.

Who konws, i might end up upgrading them again instead of just getting new rotors...
