91exCavYota's 1991 ex Cab build up!

Hey Yall this is my first toyota, a 1991 ex cab pickup 22RE w/280xxx miles bought new by my dads sis in 91, and passed down from her to my dad to me. Super excited to have this as mine, been wowed by it all my life. Basically stock, has some 30? 31? Kelly A/t's and a valley industries 3500 frame hitch. First things first, ill be replacing the clutch, as it is stock (280xxx miles!!) and is finally starting to slip a bit. Dad thinks it is underpowered, and believes it to be a Head gasket problem. Cant wait to get to work!

The california weather has treated the truck very well, and the frame has no rust whatsoever. Will keep updated as i plan to begin the work in the coming weeks(:

Orderering engnbldr master engine kit + 261 cam, w56 tranny rebuild kit, and oem clutch kit this weekend. Question? About how much is it to get my flywheel resurfaced? Would it be cheaper to order a new flywheel? Thanks!

Great looking truck for 280,000. What are your plans for it?

Well im going to fix everything first. That means a month or two of engine rebuild, transmission rebuild, and a clutch replacement. Im buying an Engnbldr kit with a 261 cam for the engine, going to be sweet. this will be my first engine rebuild so im sure ill have plenty of questions. And as for the condition after 280,000 my dad has kept it looking nice, he even has waxed it a couple times. It has never had the clutch replaced either, and it is just beginning to slip. thanks for the interest, sorry it took me a while to respond

I like that cap!

I bet it does feel under powered. Thats a tired 22re in a heavy truck. A rebuild sounds like just the thing!

Keep us updated

can anyone recommend a clutch overhaul kit? I need one containing a flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, and both release and pilot bearings. If i cant get a recommendation, i will end up buying this kit

http://www.ebay.com/itm/GRIPFORCE-OE...ht_3006wt_1185

Thanks!
Edit, found Aisin clutch kit, feel much better about OEM parts.

Hi-- I'm also looking for a good VALUE on a clutch replacement kit. Any ideas? I have a 1991 Toyota pickup Deluxe XtraCab 2x4 with 123,000 miles, clutch is slipping. Stealership wants $292.92 for the kit ALONE (and another $1,000 for labor). But I was referred to a local shop that's been doing clutches for years who'll install for $272 & let me supply the parts-- I'm looking for a kit that is superior to OEM, ceramic, well built but smooth like my original clutch which is in there now. I do haul bricks & a 350-lb. boat sometimes but no off-road.
Any INPUT much appreciated!

I reccomend a aisin clutch kit. I purchased mine from CBhausperformance on eBay. Not endorsing them at all, just where I got mine from. It is the oem clutch kit, in my opinion the best, right after the Marlin kits. It was 160.xx or close with shipping. Again, my preference, oem is my favorite, but If you've got the money to spend on a marlin kit, I'd go for that.

UPDATE:
Marlin Crawlers does NOT make a clutch kit for my 1991 2x4 XtraCab pickup. Neither did WabFam. I'll get OEM parts from Dealership and if zero confidence in doing job myself with a mechanic-friend, will use the shop that I was referred to that quoted me $272 for labor. THANK YOU ALL for great input!

Also, this is bugging me:
How does one know, before getting in there, if you need to replace rear main seal, slave cylinder, clutch master cylinder, crank, flywheel, clutch fork boot, transmission shift handle boot... & anything else you "might" replace while you've got the clutch torn out? You could say, "She's a 1991 & ALL these are original..." but, would YOU replace all these if you haven't just won the lottery? Bottom line, it's not about the $$, it's about doing the RIGHT thing. What would YOU do if you were replacing the clutch (new 1/ pilot 2/ throw out 3/ clutch disc 4/ pressure plate 5/ resurface flywheel)? Is there anything else in this you'd replace? Or anything I missed that is a "MUST-do"?
THANKS, you guys are great!

Here is how I see it. I replace all internal parts (clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and pilot.) They are a pain to get to and its not that much more to do it. I won't do a clutch job without doing all that.

OK PowerstrokeJoe-- in addition to the usual "clutch kit" parts you enumerated, would you replace anything else while you're in there? Here's the deal-- if I have a mechanic's shop do the work, it's cheaper if I have them change whatever-all-else that day vs. having to do some of it later, e.g., slave cylinder. I just don't understand (right now) how a person would KNOW before getting in there if the slave cylinder needs to be replaced, or do you just assume it's 21 years old & should be replaced?
