1986 Truck Baja Crawler Build
Still new here, but I think I get the idea of a build up. So here is where my build is at:
I bought a 86 4x4 pickup in CA for 2300. It's in need of a handful of things, but it did make the 1200mi trip home to Northern Colorado. Here are a few pics just after I bought it:
The guy I bought it from said he was owner #3. The first owner I'll call Dad. Looks like he took very good care of the truck. At some point the truck was handed to the son. Here is where I think priorities became well, different. Metal Mulisha stickers and the stereo became critical. Next the truck was sold from the son, to the best friend, or so the story goes. How is who I purchased it from. The best friend only had the truck for 4 months, also made things like cool shifter knobs, and a "racing" steering wheel top priority.
After purchase, I wanted to do as much as I could to give me the best chances to get the 1200mi in an unknown truck home. Here's what I did:
Radiator flush, removal of the 4 off road lights, re-charge and clean KnN, oil change, topped off tranny, trans case, flush rear diff, flushed brake fluid, new brake shoes, and wheel cylinders, fixed rear light wiring (did not work and was a mess). I also took it to a good guy named Eric who runs a great Yota shop in Corona, CA called YotaMasters. I paid him $100 to give it a once over before the trip. He did, and fixed/adjusted a few things. His biggest suggestion was new tires before the trip. They were really old BFGs bald, and bad cracking. Come to realize I didn't have 3-700 for new(er) tires, so I bought an extra standard size spare for $35.
We made it home safe after changing out one tire in NM, and sliding off of I25 into a ditch in the snow in southern CO.
Since home I have put a large list of things that need to be done, and things I'd like to do.
Currently here is where she's at:
1986 Toyota 4x4 truck (maybe SR5? Not sure)
33x12.5x15 tires
15x10 wheels
4in sus lift
Aftermarket torsion bars
Rear e locker
4.88 gears
Aftermarket exhaust (deep, not ricey)
22re (128k mi) swapped from an 88
Chassis has 230k mi
End goal: a truck I can drive daily, rock crawl most of what CO has to offer, drive 50-60mph off road, and jump 20-30ft long and 4-6ft high.
Plans are add Total Chaos LT kit, good shocks, front locker, roll cage, and eventually a 3rz swap.
If interested, stay tuned. I'll try to update ASAP. I am also wanting others thoughts, opinions, ideas etc. so please feel free to add your 2c. That's is why all this is here any way.

So after talking with the wife, I am sad to announce I'm selling the truck. We have 2 young kids, and a bench seat can't fit the 4 of us. Let me know if your interested. 970.541.1219
I'm now on the lookout for a 1980-1990 4Runner in Northern CO. If you have info on that let me know. Thanks!

I thought your phone number area code looked familiar.Loveland co. i lived in greeley for awhile. lot better scenery and wheelin there than here. i like the 86 for 2900. It looks pretty straight and original. I understand wanting more room for the family. We love our 97 limited just wish the 3.4 wasnt so thirsty!!
