I am running 31x10.5 tires and am trying to determine which wheel size to go with. The tire will be an AT tire and used only for camping/expedition type trips and the occasional off-roading I may be doing. I have a set of M/S tires for DD use.

I plan to run stock Toyota 6-hole steel wheels for this because I already have some and like the looks of them. The set I have is 15x6, but I like the deeper looking dish of the 15x7 much better.

I understand why a skinny wheel is called the "poor man's beadlock" but am curious if there is an appreciable difference in the 15x6 bead holding over the 15x7 when aired down with this tire size. For the mild off-road use I'll be throwing at it, I would guess probably not but was hoping some of you guys with real world experience would chime in.

The wheels will be powder coated so I'd like to get it right the first time cuz I hate throwing money away.

First, most tire manufacturers recommend between 15"x7" - 15"x9" for a 31"x10.5" tire. I'm not sure if anyone has put a 31"x10.5" on a 6" wide rim. If so, I hope they would chime in on this. It's probably been done before, but I just haven't paid close enough attention to them.

If people do say it is possible to use the 6" rims, I say just use the rims you have and not put the money out into buying another set of rims. Also, it's not like you're going to air them down to go rock crawling or anything.

31x10.5r15 will fit a 15x6 rim just fine. you'll need to watch the tread-wear and inflate the tires to get a good, even pattern.

15x7 - 15x9 is ideal, but you'll be fine with 15x6

I hadn't thought about Mfg. recommendations, good point. The airing down would be mostly to help soak up the rocks, potholes and washboard on FS roads.

I figured the 15x6 would fit, was curious about advantages/disadvantages. From the replies and other links, 15x6 appears to be less than ideal since you have to run a bit lower pressure for even tire wear, which will adversely affect the steering and road handling. To me this far outweighs my airing down concerns so I'll be selling the 15x6 and going 15x7.
