91 4.3l in a 81 pickup
So the manual transmission went out in my truck (81 toyota pickup 22r 5sp manual) and i might have my hands on a 91 s-10 4wd cheap but with an auto transmission. So my question is would it b worth trading the s-10 auto for a manual and try using the engine/manual trans and t/c out of the s-10??

i d prob get ride of the s-10 trans and t-case. if you want to go auto go 700r4 if you wan the 5 speed get the v8 one way stronger and lower 1st gear. go to advanced adapters and get the gm trans to toy t-case and run your toy t-case. the swap has been done so many times you can get everything and almost bolt it in. NWOR has the motor mounts and swap headers.

If you don't go with the Toy case, then your not allowed around here anymore. Most people want a manual, but most have never crawled with an Auto. Find someone with low gears and an auto, try it. I never though I would go to auto, but the first time I stopped in the middle of a steep precarious situation, I will never go back to burning clutch to avoid rolling back. It is a matter of preference though

You have some questions to ask yourself
Are you willing to destroy the Sonoma ?
Are you a fabricator ?
Are you good at electrical?
Is the truck a Daily driver, and do you have smog laws?
Can you be without both vehicles for the duration of the swap ?
My swap costed, me around $1500, that included the donor vehicle, adapter, and 700R4 tailshaft swap, and odds and ends. It would cost alot more if I didn't fabricate parts, and did my own wiring.
You need to also decide wether, your gonna go with the 4.3+Auto (the matched pair) or 4.3 + toyota 5 speed. Both adapters will cost you, Advance Adapters, is a good source.
I would get a swap manual from AA, Downey (although don't use downey parts), and even Jags That Run. This will give you a better idea on whats involved.
