Timing issues on rebuild motor
I have fuel, air, and spark. However, timing seems to be the issue now. Set the distributor in right (over #1 on compression stroke TDC) and it seems like it wants to start in between a certain range of moving it. Go too far retarted and it doesn't sound like it will start...too far advanced and it doesn't sound like it will start. In the middle it seems like it is almost there just not making it. Double checked that the cam is at TDC when the bottom end is and it is right on so its not off any teeth. Any helpful hints on getting it going? Does the new cam (Engnbldr 261) or other upgrades have anything to do with it? Anyone with a built 22re have any problems getting it going?

Yes and it took me about 15 tries to get the distributor indexed in the right spot. I was fitting the same thing, thinking if was dead on but I was 1 tooth off. Pull it back until it just comes off the gear and move it 1 tooth up or down at a time. Make sure the adjustment bolt hole is lined up with the center of the slot when lining up the rotor button. Keep at it.

Well moved the distributor around and got nothing... checked it on every tooth. It has to be something else. Any suggestions on where to look next. I hate little details

Are you sure your valves are adjusted correctly? If one or more aren't closing all the way you will lose your compression. If you are positive your timing is correct and you are getting fuel, then I'd do a compression check.

It actually sounds like you may have the cam timing off by one tooth, this will create a feel of very narrow range for getting her to fire. Also cylinder pressure will read lower than normal.....*EB
