Mustang 4.6 DOHC Swap - Reasonable?
I've got access to a full speed shop with everything I'd need to complete the swap...but I haven't seen anything on the 4.6 swap in a Toyota before.
But my question is... Would a 4.6 4V DOHC Mustang motor even fit in a 89 Toyota? That is a wide motor!
It's going to be either a 4.6 or a LS1...
What is your take on this swap?'
Thanks,
Nick

Hoiw much research have you done on the motor and the Toyota engine bay? I think with a few simple measurments of the bay and motor mount points and tranny lenght and such you'll figure out real quick if it can be done.

Alright, I'm a mustang guy - see sig.
No, I would not put a DOHC 4v = 32v cobra motor in this vehicle, the heads are too big for clearance. I would however put a SOHC 2v = 16v engine in the 4Runner, and I just happen to have a spare...
This is down the road a bit, but you would have ot have custom galore to make it work, it's done on Jeeps ALOT so you can look.

Honestly, even being a Ford guy, I would do the LS1 before I did the 2v 4.6 as I didn't see you had that option in there, I've been leaning that way myself and I have a spare 4.6 so take that for what you will.

Yeah, thanks for your opinion. I would not even consider the 2V motor over the 4V...but I've seen LS1 swaps done before so I may take that route. I've got a Z06 with a LS6 so I'd be more familiar with that motor anyway!
Thanks again

That engine is awesome, but its a pain in the ass to work around in the car that it was designed to fit in. I put Hooker Long Tubes on my 99 Cobra and it was nightmarish.
Without pounding in firewalls and fenderwells, there is no way that motor is going to fit.

Hi there, I am not familiar with what kits you can buy in your country for these mods, but I think the LS1 is a better option, it is a fairly compact motor and parts are easy to come by, and there is plenty of room in a Toyota to put one in. the only thing you will have a bit of a problem with will be the starter motor. You may find you need an offset starter to get over the rod on the top of the diff. in Australia we had a GM Holden and they worked out well for us because they used almost everything the Chev motor uses but the starter is on the opposite side, but you still need to do plenty of research before you go ahead the motor going into the engine bay is only the tip of the iceberg. I am using the T700 trans in my runner and that meant shortening the rear drive shaft and lengthening the front one, and then the issues with wiring and computers to deal with. If that doesn't bother you, then go for it, you will be glad you did. I love V8's and I think it is the best mod I could have done to my 4 Runner.
