Broken Lug Nuts

Broken Lug Nuts
OK, so I got a flat in my FJ (nail). I have changed the tire by myself and later took it to a large tire repair/sales chain in Canada for fixing. I asked them to tighten the nuts with a torque wrench. They broke off one of the nuts (it might have been cross threaded). They said they will fix it and did but during the tightening again they broke off another one. This one was not cross threaded and they said they used a proper torque setting on the wrench.
I took it to the Toyota dealer and they claim that it was an error on behalf of the technician in the tire repair shop.
I have a trust in that repair shop and did not think it would be that easy to break the lug nut.
Is it possible that I have weaken the nuts when replacing the tire. I actually stepped on the wrench to tighten the screws (the manual says just to use hands).
Any ideas ?

I can't believe you walked out of the repair shop with that line of BS, go back, smack them upside the head, then hit yourself for listening to them, and get your lugs replaced.
For the record, I only ever tighten my lug nuts with my hands (and the 4way of course) and I have never had a problem. Don't step on them unless you are exceedingly feeble.

Had the same thing happen to me a few times with my 4runner. I was using the 4 way to hand tighten and the studs justed snapped off. Both times took it to the dealer and they replaced it under warrenty. Now I just make sure I don't tighten them as hard.
