2000 4runner OEM alarm system
Hi
I was just wondering, if the 2000 toyota 4runner comes prewired for the factory alarm. If so, where can I purchase the alarm system? How do I hook it up? I dont have to use the engine emobilizer system do I? Cause then I would need new keys/locks wouldnt I? I know i have the panic button on the remote, so does that mean the wiring is there? Thanks

dibble,
there are two rs3200 alarms on sale on ebay right now.
as for installation, i took my old rs3000 out of my 4runner. i betcha the install process is very close if not identical to the 3200. it is not as "plug and play' as jason makes it seem. the only thing easy about it is plugging in the alarm brain unit. the rest is all about tapping wires with supplied wire taps. the good part though is that (on the rs3000) all the tappping occurs in the driver's side dash area.
search "rs3200" on this forum for more advice and reading.
that is all i have to say on this subject!

Just curious for anyone that has the stock alarm... Where is your brain box located?
Mine was mounted under my driver seat. I chose to move it up further so it's not easy to get at and give me more room for stuff under my seat. There is a nice sized "hidden" cavity under the carpet in front of the driver seat.

If the dealer installed it, that's where it would be.

I added an RS3200 to my 99 (same as a 00) about 2 months ago. After a bit of disassembly of the drivers side trim pieces, the alarm harness plugs into the existing harness directly. Expect to spend two hours or so, going slow.
The alarm brain box bolts to the center console, just to the right and a little below your right knee. The alarm indicator replaces one of the blank cutouts to the left of the steering wheel. The 'Security' light as described in the owners manual has no application, AFIK.
This RS3200 alarm should not be confused with the Remote Keyless Entry. The RKE is standard on SR5 4Runners, at least for the 99 and 00 years. I picked up the RS3200 equipment for around $100 or so, off Ebay.

I've done this as well. install is easy, brain is located right next to your right knee, manual says recommend glass breakage sensor level to 2 i think, but go with 3 or one higher because at 2 it does not go off when you tap on the glass with a key. easy install and fool-proof because of the different connector types. took me about 2hrs, most spent on taking off interior panels and pieces, you gotta take off the remote gas and trunk release as well.

No I do not have a blinking light. The best way to test if you do have an alarm is to role the window down, lock your truck how you normally to with the remote, wait a minute, then unlock the door through the window and open the door, no sound, no alarm.

I just purchased and installed the RS3200 Plus (for vehicles with factory keyless remote entry). Total install time was about 1.5 hours. All conections were direct plug-in, no taps or splices required (for my 2000 SR5 4WD)
I purchased the kit from the Brandsport.com. for 69.00 + S&H.

Im installing my new alarm system soon, before I get my remote start installed. If anyone else wants to add the RS3200 plus alarm to their 2000 toyota 4runner, I can email you exact installation instructions in a .pdf file, directly from the manual that the dealership uses.

Dang, $69 is one hell of a price. I may have to get in on that as well. I could use the peace of mind of an alarm system, I'm just not wild about spending $300+ for a Viper system and having some stereo store guy ripping the dash apart to install it. I definitely don't have time to install a Viper right now, but I would this.

I also heard that you wont gain any distance because the antenna wire has to have a certain resistance. Just wondering how to increase range without putting an aftermarket system in.

If memory serves me right the brain is located under the seat in the 96-98 years but moved when they came out with the new center console with cup holders since thats were the alarm LED and mic was located prior to moving it to the dash.
I was not to happy with the range of my stock unit it really sucked I had to be like 50' or less to unlock the doors and disarm it.
I ditched it all and replaced it with the Viper 2way remote start unit now I can almost be 1/2 mile away depending on whats around me to start/arm/disarm its was nice to get more range. So my stock alarm brain unit and key fob are some were in my garage collecting dust (well thats where I last saw it)
I personal say go aftermarket if you don' have one installed yet. I recall them having some kinda Yotatech deal on the commando remote start alarms for a resonable price too, theirs a post some were about it.

Three things really left on my agenda for my truck (for now at least)....
1. New shocks and struts
2. Alarm system
3. Repainting (front bumper, lower valence, roof rack rails, etc)
No cash for it right now, so they are going to have to wait. I'll definitely go aftermarket on the alarm system though when I decide to do it. I had a Viper before and was pleased with it, although it didn't have the remote start. I'm NOT going to put it in myself, so I'll have to pay someone for that as well.
