Transmission makes "Croak" sound
Hello all,
I have a little issue that i HOPE can be solved. My 4Runner is an automatic 2WD, 10 and 1/2 years old, basically in excellent running condition. I visit here alot and have been helped and entertained by many of the smart people here. My 4Runner's got 143,000 miles and I'd like to add 100,000 more (at least).
Anyway, lately when I shift from Park to Reverse the transmission makes a "croak" sound and the truck jumps ever so slightly even though I'm pressing the brakes. When I go from Reverse to Neutral there is no sound or jump. But, when I go from Neutral to Drive I get the "croak" and slight jump.
Driving is flawless as it goes throught the gears very smoothly.
I know something can be adjusted a bit but I don't know where to start.
Anyone have any ideas? I have a Haynes manual and the troubleshooting section has pointed out a couple of things but I thought I'd get ya'lls opinion. Thanks.

Not sure about the sound as I cant really immagine a "croak" noise, but it seems to me like a u-joint could be going out, or possible play in the rear end. Jack the rear of the truck up on jackstands, put the trans in neutral, and grab ahold of the drive shaft to check for play.
Have someone get in the truck and re-create the noise while you look under the truck at the trans and rear end to see whats moving and where the noise is coming from.
