Is it me or did Toyota ruin the 4Runner?
I've always loved the 4Runner.
Back in 2002 I decided to go drive the then new 2003 model. I drove the V6 and V8 and didn't like either. It felt big and clunky and heavy.
I quickly found a used 2002 model on the Toyota Dealer lot, test drove it and snatched it up. It was an SR5 4x4 with a rare leather option I'd not seen before and only had 12K miles. It came with a 100,000 miles 7 year warranty since it was "Toyota Certified". I've since supercharged, Urd 7th, etc, etc, etc, and absolutly LOVE IT. It has been 100% trouble free for the past 70,000 miles. I've not even had to put tires or brakes on it yet.
I had hoped that when the next generation came along (5th gen) that Toyota would get a little more back to the basics and come up with something really cool. Needless to say I'm quite disappointed in the 2010 4Runner.
It's not very nice looking, is bigger, and the two engine options are a 2.7L 4 cylinder????? and a 4.0L V6 which you can't get the TRD Supercharger for. Heaven forbid they offer the 5.7L V8 (with the Supercharger option) and a manual transmission. Maybe they'll come around and have something more exciting for 2011.
So sad...Toyota used to rock.
Thank God for my 2002. I guess they'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

4.0 does have a supercharger for it i beliee.
and im grateful for my 92... its small, compact, seats 4 comfortable, 5 if you have a smaller person. and it gets the job done. Im not a fan of any other 4runner after 2002 myself.

I think the 4Runner pretty much died around 2002.5. The 4th gen had some features that may sound appealing to off roading, such as hill start assist, and others....but it's too expensive, and too big to wheel and have any fun. And the 5th gen is an abomination. I like mine just the way it is, even if it is underpowered just a hair. lol

That's only on the Trail Edition right? And it's only a rear locker if I read it right when I spec'd one out today.
Seems like a lot of coint (~5K) over the SR5 for the locker and scoop hood.
Toyota screwed the pooch on the 5th gen.
With that, the gas pedal fiasco, and all the QA issues I've read about with the Tacomas, I'm afraid Toyota is headed down a slippery slope, and it's quite disappointing. Even my girl was commenting on these very topics yesterday while we were tooling around in our 4Runner.

Also, I spec'd out a 2010 Tacoma 4x4 today with the V6 and it doesn't look like you can get a manual in it either!

[QOUTE=Speedy;51351921]Agreed, I looked at doing a 5 speed conversion on mine and don't think that's even possible unless I swap motors with a 5 speed version.

According to my local Toyota dealership the east coast as a whole has only 1 trail edition and it's a demo and pre sold and maybe the only one the east coast see's all year how lame is that.

Hmmm, I haven't seen one in person yet but I thought they looked pretty nice. I never liked the 4th gen, and getting back to a little more "boxy" on the '10 was good for me. I'll have to check one out in person, the MPG and power on the '10 engines sounded good too. I'm not buying though, I'll never be without my '98... EVER.

i like the look of the new runner. it is a new SUV enough said.
the trail edition is a nice attempt to try to get the guys to buy it not only their wives.
Toyota's main mistake was ditching the SFA.

The 4Runner has been slowly being ruined since 1986. It is supposed to be a truck... but it is getting wussified as follows:
-1986 - IFS took place of the SFA
-1990 - No more removable top, 2WD available (WTF?!?!)
-1996 - No more flip down tailgate
-2003 - selectable rear locker disappears, 4 cylinder option goes away
Just my opinion. Granted, I own a 3rd gen...

Why cant any car company just make one model that is the good old fashion car or truck that everyone loves. I would love a mix of the body style of the second gen with the tailgate and removable top of the first gen along with SAS and nothing else fancy. That is where jeep is smart, because the wrangler has stayed pretty much the same.
