EGR valve ports question

I have the EGR valve out for some cleaning and want to know if the port in the second picture should go all the way through and is it wide open in there or does it come to a smaller opening inside the pipe?

When I took off the vaccuum line to this port I saw all kinds of dry crusty buildup. So after hours of cleaning it with assorted wires and carb cleaner I got the wire in to what seems the inside of the EGR to head pipe. The thing I don't get is my wire still bottoms out inside and I can't seem to get anymore crud out of there.
The screw is not budging and I'm not interested in drilling and tapping so it stays.

Does anyone know what the inside of this port is like?

Yea, that is just pressed in, and that flat part's screwed down to hold it. It goes in a 1/2 inch or so, and just opens up to the main passage in there. If you got all the crud out with a wire thats cool. I had to straighten mine out and drill with a 3/32 or so drill bit to clean mine. then you can plug the bottom (where it mounts to the head) w/ your finger and blow into the tube to see if the air leaks by the valve.

Thanks I got through. It took lots of elbow grease but I finally got carb cleaner coming out the bottom. I was about to call it good enough but persistance paid off.
I'm off to the smog shop again tomorrow.
