On board air

Thinking about a new project for Runner. I want a on board air system that will allow me to fill my 35's in a timely manner. I'm unsure of the size of tank to use, but from what I've seen, most people are using 2.5gal. I found this twin piston compressor. I don't want it taking 5 minutes for each tire, so do you guys think this will do the trick.. I'll posting pics and updating this thread with the install process.

dont know much about the one you referenced, but i just found out recently that an a/c compressor of a 67 for p/u is a belt driven unit that can fill a 5 gal tank and hold steady at 100 psi for quite awhile, i believe you have to wire in a bypass valve due to it being belt driven, but i have seen these things run airbags on mini trucks with 3/4 in. airline and be able fill all bags in seconds....

well it should work ok. i'm running one of there single piston compresers with a tank and the only thing the tank does is help pop a bead. it runs ot of air fast but with the duel pistons it should work a lot beter than mine. now i need to upgrade.

I was in the yard yesterday and ran into a guy who told me that some caddys with air suspension and some gm montana minivans have a compressor in the engine bay right front (caddys) not sure where on montanas that puts out enough pressure to inflate a tire and what not... have'nt found one yet but I'll be looking tomorrow...

Back in Utah, alot of the yard had alot of mid 90's Range Rovers. and in those range rovers there is a compressor that will fill 4 air bags in seconds and hold good pressure! See if you can't get one of them, its just a 3 wire compressor

It has to be this body style (I believe newer have them as well) but it will be on the driver side in the box in the yellow box (its a simple push clip and you lift one side and slide off... Hope this helps. We used to have a 98 Range Rover, those studid compressors are $500~$1200

I am sorry but I don`t think being able to inflate( 4) 33" tires in 20 minutes is real fast .

If I am going to the trouble of installing on board air i want something a whole lot better.

Then this might be fine for your needs.

Good luck.

although I agree 5 minutes per tire for a 33" is slow, this is probably from 0psi to 35 psi. Which is roughly 8.5 seconds per psi. (probably not linear though).

With that in mind if your wheeling and air down to 15psi you only have to air up each tire 20psi. thats 2 minutes 48 seconds per tire. About 11 minutes to air up 4 tires. Took me longer than this and $3 at a gas station to air my 31's back up from 15 psi to 35 psi on my last wheeling trip.

What I would do to help is use this in conjunction with an air tank somewhere.

use the factory a/c pump? My grandpa had a setup on his 79 chev 4x4. stock a/c pump and brackets with a relay/pressure switch. run the line to a small tank under the hood and a good length of line he stored in the fender. sounds different but it worked fine for years.

A york compressor is probably your best bet and it has been done a few times already they can be found on a few different cars. I got mine of a jeep wagoneer with the 360 in it.

I used my A/C compressor for my OBA. It takes about 1.5 minutes to fill my 12 gal tank from 0 to 145 psi. I can air up my 33's just as fast as the compressor at the shop, and run air tools too. I love it! Have a look....

Click on the link in my sig line. Go to York on board air. If you have a 22R/RE motor, then this is the best solution for FAST on board air. Filled a 31x10.5 from 8-35psi in about 30-45 seconds IIRC, depending on engine rpm.

Did you read the specs on that compressor ?. It said it would fill eight 33'' tires in forty minutes, so that`s five minutes for each tire. You have 35'' tires so your looking at about seven to eight minutes each to fill a 35'' tire. You said you didn`t want it taking five minutes to fill each tire.
