More stats on your truck would be helpful. If its not a Tacoma, then putting a 2.7L in would be a lot of work. The intake and exhaust are on opposite sides of the 22re/3vze. If it has a 3vze already, putting a 22re or a 2.7L would be more difficult that putting a 3.4L in, AFAIK

Im running and speaking off of asupmtion, and some off of pure genius.
Ill start with this.
I suppose you mean the 2.4 or 2.7 out of a 2wd or 4wd tacoma, respectivly.
The 2rz and 3rz are almost the same engine, 142hp and 150hp, again respectivly.
Second, If your going to go through all that trouble to swap in a different motor, why not just go for the one thats got that much more horsepower, both swaps are going to be the same amount of work.
And semicontradicting what previous poster said, yeah the exhaust is on the opposite side, but thats something that is easily taken care of...in all seriousness.
Hope that helps

no offense scuba but having the exhaust on the right hand side would be more difficult to setup. The gas tank is on the passanger side. You'd have to install a crossover pipe somewhere behind the transmission.
and to the OP, I'd stick with a 22RE. You'd have to do some major rewiring, and for a 92 2wd... really doesnt seem worth it.

None taken at all drew, didnt really think aboot the gas tank...But...I mean, in the scheem of things, exhaust seems like the one of the least important issues with a motor swap..And might I add, Where did the "2wd" come from...?

just my 2 cents, my rig is a 93 reg cab sas and i swapped in a 97 2.7. it is as much work as everyone thinks. exhaust is simple, wiring not bad, fabbing motor mounts, etc. the power difference is questionable. the 22re did work alot harder off road, but low range never failed me. a fresh 22re would have been fine but the donor 2.7 was free. marlin crawler has a build of a 2000 2.7 into a 1980ish pickup. do this swap if you like a lot of work. i enjoyed the whole process.

GEARS GEARS GEARS, a healthy 22re pushes out 115hp if your lucky, A healthy 3rz 150hp. If your losing all that power through the drivetrain the difference isnt going to be felt. You cant get 35hp on a 22re with bolt on's....

my truck is running 5.29s with lockers front and rear. 33 inch mud terrains most of the time. i run 35 inch all terrain procomps in the snow. i like being in high range, saving low range for when i really need it. reading back in my post i see that i wasn't supporting the swap as much as i thought. I LOVE the 2.7, more power in the future is easier. i don't think i would pull a good running 22re to do this swap. i guess i am trying to play the fence without getting flamed. i have researched this swap for hours before i did it, knowing that i did not have all the answers. some people say 22re all the way, others think chevy, or supra. i got my motor free. i am keeping totally toyota. anyone with questions about the swap, i will try to help, i just did it all in october.

Hah, x2, If the 22re was good no reason, if it was blown...then thats a totally different thing...Quick question, is there a huge difference between the 35's and 33's...Optimum for 33's would be 4.56 or 4.88,so 5.29's seem a little low....?

i did go a little low on gears, but i only wanted to do it once. i can fit larger than 35 no problem, just don't need them. i saw it posted here that 5.29's is the top end of 33 and best for 35s. i also bought the gears when i was running the 22re and it needed those gears. this truck is fast enough on the street, i know my turbo civic, 93 rx7, crappy passport are all faster on the road, but offroad was the plan. my 2.7 does tach higher than i want in 5 th gear, but it pulls so strong at any speed and i still get 17 mpg.
