This is a good article if you read it, it is a long read but very good. Oil arguments go on forever. The thinner at startup will be better, the majority of engine wear is at startup, you dont want to be pushing honey thru the system every morning. I run 5w oil in everything i got tho year round here in georgia. BTW 5w-30 and 10-30 are almost identical at operating temps, thats in that article also

My oil is dropping a weight class. Hopefully it will get a title shot at middleweight.

yeah, and apparently synthetic 10w-30 is thinner at room temp than mineral 10w-30 So even just switching to synthetic would help the situation out at start up.

I just changed over to Shell Rotella T6 5W40 Sytnthetic about 6K miles ago on my 22RE and it didn't cause any leaks or loss of oil. But, I didn't have any of those issues before. I noticed out here it cranks up much easier on cold mornings. The diesel oil also has ZDDP which is good for our flat tappet engines. It's also only about $20 for a gallon at Wally World in my neck of the woods.

Rotella T6 5W-40 is what I run everything on in the winter. My 22R plow truck is running 15W-40 Rotella or Delo 15W-40.

The only reason I run Rotella is because I drive a diesel pickup and it's easy to get for roughly $10. a gallon at some point throughout the year. Back when I was a full size Jeep guy, people touted the detergency of diesel motor oil...While I've never had an oil analysis done, lots of people have gotten good results with it. Hell, if a diesel motor doesn't shear it, could a 22R?

Diesel oils have special additives in them mainly zinc, or so i've heard. But i'm planning on switching to synthetic my next oil change, I was going to go with Redline 5w-30, but it's a PITA to get around here, and i've always been a castrol person, and they just came out with the new Castrol EDGE full synthetic, which IS available in all the auto stores around here and I was gonna use a K&N filter. Any body used the stuff and know how it runs?

Shell Rotella T6 5W40 Synthetic. $20 a gallon at Wally World. And I run a stock Toyota filter.

No idea on the new Castrol Edge, but I did a ton of research on oil and finally settled on the Shell synthetic. I'm sure the Castrol is quality though.

20w - 50 in Memphis. Old engine high miles. It doesnt get that cold here. summers are in the 90-100s. My dad as an old school mechanic thinks it is just a good precaution on and old engine. It actually quiets the engine down a little. Plus it will slow leaks some i guess. In theory it would actually rob the engine of power since it takes more effort to push thick oil through the veins of an engine. Like think blood on a heart. Thats why we give aspirin to people who are having heart attacks. It thins the blood and makes it easier for the heart to pump. But dont put aspirin in your oil.

Interesting info. I just put in castrol HM 10w40 on my last oil change. I think I might try the 20w50 to see if it helps quiet the engine a little. What temp range would you suggest not driving with this oil in? Also Most of my trips in cold weather (30-50F eastern shore VA) will be short distances (2-3 miles). I'll let the truck warm up a little bit before I take off but it may not be fully up to temp.

Yeah, shell does put out quality products, I think i'm going to try the EDGE though, it supposedly protects 8x better than Mobil 1 and my mom has used that and fram filters in her Rodeo for 140,000 miles, and almost never changes it, yet somehow, it runs like brand new. I'm actually dropping a grade in my oil, I can deal with some engine noise, if it means I get oil over my cams and rockers faster.

I run 10W-30 Valvoline Fully Synthetic, In my 92 because it doesnt really get to cold here. In my 99 I run Conventional Mobil 1 5W-30 Personally I like Synthetic more..I believe that most synthetic oils are mostly the same. I just look at the Specs of the Oil on the back. I prefer to use Valvoline ,or Castrol Fully Synthetic. So just figure out what oil you like and stick with it.

Yep. figure out what oil you like and stick with it and change it consistently and you'll be good to go.
