after driving down many dirt roads i have accumulated a vast amount of paint chips and rust spots on the bottom half of my 4runner. i planned on doing this a year ago and have everything i need except on how to prep for it. i checked some threads and none specified on the sanding method as the can says to just rough up the paint and other pictures i've seen on here look like they have been sanded down to the metal.

is there anyone that has had good results with durability and on what sanding method they used?

i also need a good durable uv protectant coat if anyone has some ideas.

i just did my cargo area in my 4runner a few weeks ago with the rustolum stuff and for the prep i hand sanded it with 50 grit. till all the shiny paint was gone and its holdin up great so far.

like he mentioned, rough it up a lot....than clean it with a solvent or something to get rit of the paint dust

I have had terrible durability issues with Herculiner. At first it looked great and went on well. The issue is that you need to use the UV Topcoat or it will fade to a very light gray. So I used the topcoat (Herculiner has a product line) and it started to peel after about a year. Now it's a flaking mess. In fact, I literally just ripped my front bumper off and bought a new one (in black) it was so bad.

I'd like to think I know a thing or two about prep work considering I worked for Rhino Linings for over two years and own a paint business now...so as you can imagine I prepped everything carefully. The issue with my good prep work is that I couldn't get the Herc off to fix it!

I also did my rear bumper and sides - same issue. It's a total flaking mess.

If I would have just stuck with the flat black paint everything would be fine. Oh well.
