My new 1990 4runner!

Hey guys my I thought i would introduce myself, my names Ryan and I just bout a 1990 4runner with 120k miles "supposedly" I was told it wasn't the original motor, it was replaced by the current one in it even though there's no real proof. It's a v6 3.0 liter( I know blown head gaskets blah blah blah) and it's 5 speed and 4wd. Bought it and drove it home an hour and half and drove it for about 30 mins today and so far I like it! What really made me but was how clean it was for it's age, the paint looks excellent, only few minor dings and those are in the rear bumber. All windows work besides sunroof. No cel or anything. Justed want to post to get some info since I'm a newbie with trucks, I'm a car guy but I've always like the older Toyota! I don't plan to take this baby mudding or off-road just mainly a dd, I would like for it to look good though, maybe a small lifted and some 33's? What would be a reasonable type of lift to get for the truck since I don't want to go off-road? Just for looks. I might get ragged on for this haha but I don't want to beat the truck up because it's just in too good of condition. Thanks guys!

Welcome to Yotatech! That's a clean 4Runner! I don't know much about the rear suspension of the 2nd gen 4Runners, simply because I don't have one. I'm guessing a set of longer/stiffer springs or a set of coil spacers should do the trick. Someone might be able to chime in on that. As for the front, a simple set of ball joint spacers will do. If the 33s still rub with 1.5" bj spacers, just trim whatever it's rubbing on.

I would use the search function at the top to gather even more info. There are literally thousands of threads about lifting and larger tires. These two threads came to mind. I was also thinking of another, but I couldn't find it. It was one specifically for 2nd gen 4Runners. But skimming through these should be a good start.

EDIT: Found the other thread. It's not really a technical thread. It's just a pic thread.

thanks for the reply man! and thanks for the compliment! I realized today driving it to and from work the gas mileage is ehh, but I definiately like it, I plan on doing an oil change, radiator flush and transmission fluid change here shortly to get caught up on the maintence. then after I scramble up some of that green stuff id like to look into those bj spacers as you said. But from looking through the thread id think I would like to go with a 4 inch lift and some 35's. I feel like that's more of the look for me and I was wondering how badly would that affect my gas mileage?

Rolling off the factory floor these vehicles had 19 MPG highway and 15 MPG city, if I recall correctly, giving it a mixed driving rating about 17 MPG. Giving it's age and if you put larger tires, I'd be surprised if you got 15, probably less.

33's is a good size tire 35's are a big heavy tire. You will increase your overall rotating mass by a large number adding extra strain to the motor to get you up to speed. That combined with stock tire gear ratio and it will all butt kill your mileage and be a really slow pig. I am not saying don't do it. But if you do then maybe consider putting a set of lower gears front and rear so you can turn the tires a little easier. If it were me I would do the bj spacer and diff drop up front and a coil spacer of some sort in the rear to make it level. I will be a lot easier on your drive train if you want to leave it alone and just drive it. Besides Toyotas look lifted stock. Pick them up just 2 inches and they look awesome with just 33's. That with some good armor, bumpers, sliders , ect.. And you may not wheel it now but it will be ready to go when you want to.

1 inch body lift should clear 33s I'd think. 31s were swapped in by Toyota as a package w/ no modifications other than slightly different axle gearing. If on a budget I'd go w/ the 31x10.5r15s as you can probably keep everything else the same. Bigger and you're going to need to spend money on lifts, gearing, etc.

I'll have to bookmark that link. A couple months ago, I was trying to find that exact thread to send to someone else and no matter how much I looked, I couldn't find it
