My first car

HI all i got my first vehicle a 1992 toyota pickup bought it from my history teacher from school has zero body rust the engine runs smoothly and the tranny shift like butter (5spd). I have just started driving and wanted to add a little power to it as it feels sluggish to me, was wondering what size the stock exhaust was from cat back.

Congrats on the new truck! What engine do you have? If you search and read some other threads on this site I think a lot of folks upgrade to 2.5" pipe..?.. I could be wrong though. If it's feeling a little sluggish (and since the vehicle is new to you) you may want to go through all the basic maintenance and tune-up stuff before you start mods. Just my opinion though. Enjoy.

what ever engine he has its not important! (22re or 3slow) it'll be slugish!
hahaha it's a toyota, won't be quick but it will always take you where you want to go.

and you said you are starting to drive? as in "I am learning to drive for the first time ever"? that being the case if you started in the yota any other newer or lighter car will be a rocket! hahaha

all joking aside you should take your truck to a friend or a shop (if you are not really into wrenching) to do a general maint. filters, fluids, sparkplugs, wires, maybe cleaning the injectors, check the cat if isn't cluged.

if all that it's ok you should consider an ISR mod (many have done it with good resoults me included and it's simple and unexpensive) upgrade to a bigger exhaust (I don't know if that helps without having headers)

Congrats for the truck and enjoy it! I know I did it when I first got mine (93 extcab 3slow) but try to take care of it and don't trash it to much if you go wheeling with your friends

sorry if my english is not great cuse it's not my native language.

hiGis is right yota trucks aren't really built for speed!

I didn't know if engine would matter in pipe size (to answer his question)

but ya maintenance would be no. 1 on the list ... go through it all now so you know where you stand. There are great write ups on this site for just about everything you could want to do to your truck.

I would suggest what a vet YT member told me when I first signed up a week or so ago. Edit your truck info into your signature, and location in avatar.

This will help everyone be able to help you better when you get some more tech questions.

and once again congrats... now you'll be hooked on yote's for life!

Welcome to Toyota ownership. It's probably sluggish because it's a 20 year old truck that never had much power to begin with.

I put a 2.25 in cat back on my 86 and really didn't notice much improvement-at least not enough to justify the cost.

Warning! Old guy advice-unless you have specific plans for upgrades, like a lot of the off-roaders around here do, you're better off upgrading parts as they need replacing. If you need a new exhaust, then go for it. There aren't a lot of hidden horsepower to be found in these trucks, and they were built very well from the factory. There's no sense in tearing off perfectly good parts when you could use that money to chase women.

Enjoy your truck. It won't be the last Yota you own.

Make sure you take the cat off of that thing. Cat-back exhaust will do little to nothing for you. My buddy did it to his '90 4runner and was very unhappy with the results. He said it definitely wasn't worth the money he paid. I, on the other hand, swapped exhaust with my neighbor's '94 single cab 22R-E because he wanted a quieter exhaust, so we swapped one day. Now, mine's stock manifold into stock downpipe welded straight to 2.25 with no cat and a flowmaster 40. Not only does it sound badass but the improvement in acceleration was more than surprising. Can't wait to get a tri-y header and 2 1/4 all the way out.

Long story short; catalytic converters are gay.

A cat converter will not hinder the performance of a motor unless its;

Clogged and or dirty from years and years of cheap gas and additives to the fuel,

You're running forced induction such as a turbo, supercharger and are boosting above 6-9 psi

It is also against federal law to remove or alter emission control devices on vehicles that come from the factory with them.
