Ignition timing issue?
Recently replaced the head gaskets on my 97' 4Runner SR5 (5VZFE). Followed the service manual and a Hayes manual simultaneously and primed everything before starting it today. It cranked right up but only idled smoothly for maybe 1 sec before seemingly choking itself out. I started it again and gave it a little gas only to hear a gargling sound coming from the intake(K&N filter). I replaced the timing belt, water pump, head gaskets, spark plugs and wires, and made sure all my vacuum lines and connectors were secured. Any ideas where to check next? I was thinking maybe I need to check the ignition timing or clean the IAC/MAF? I'd hate to have to tow it to the dealer after I've gotten this far. Thanks for any help!

Gargling sound? As in liquid? Do you have the coolant lines to the throttle body hooked up correctly?
Do you have any pics of your cam and crank alignment when you did the timing belt?

I don't have photos of my cam alignment but I have the crankshaft picture . I followed the image from the Haynes manual . I am 98% sure all the hoses and lines were replaced correctly, before disconnecting I labeled both sides of each hose. I suppose I could take the timing cover off and triple check my alignment, which I'll try and do tonight. The gargle sound does sound like liquid but only happens when I try and keep the motor alive. I've been looking in the manual for some diagram of the intake system but haven't had any luck. I'll continue my search. Thanks for your help.
[UPDATE] New Symptom: White smoke exhaust which I know is a bad sign.

well... how long was your head gasket bad for? a lot of fluid could have accumilated in the exhaust. Pull your plugs, are they wet? hows your coolant level? did you get the heads pressure tested cleaned or milled? how did the blocks deck look? is the maf sensor hooked up? is the intake on? did you get the hoses at the throttle body correct?
