I want to buy a Hi-Lift jack, but would like to get feedback on what model is best and why you think that way. There are three models available, with the cast/steel one being more readily available and the one I can easly source. When going off road, I'll mount it outside the vehicle on the front (ARB) bumber, unless I can find a proper roof basket mounting mechinism, but I haven't found one that works yet with my Sportrack basket.

Will the cast/steel model survive as long as the all cast model? What's the pros/cons of each?

I have a Red one...with a 48" and 60" bar.

The all cast would be best all around.....it's what I have in a 48". If I ever get a place outside the truck to mount it I may get a 60" bar also.

the difference in the cast and cast/steel it that, well both bars are the same, when they say cast or steel, its refering to the hook on the end of the bar that you can attach a chain or strap to. i preffer the steel one, becuase when under load if it is to fail the steel plate that is attached to a chain or strap will not break it will bend and twist. and when the cast attachment is under load and fails it cracks in half causing a potentialy harzardous situation. the cast one is probly stronger than the steel plate, but i dont think its as safe.

You would think the X-Treme version would have a higher lifting capacity then the other two.

harbor freight farm jack... My friend bought one and it hasn't failed in the past couple years he's owned it.

Any of those would be fine. You could save a few bucks getting Generic one from a farm store but I would recommend getting the real one. If you have room get the 60". Like anything exposed to the elements you will need to maintain it (lube). There is a plastic case available that is similar to a rifle case that is very reasonable, I just couldn't find the link...
