changing out rear ends

I want to change out the rear end of my 86 toyota 2wd 22r(?not sure the difference) with something with a better gear ( I.E. a pozi with 3.43 gears from an explorer or something like that). Now its not a rock crawler or off road truck just want to go faster and launch better, its sort of becoming a drag truck and because it surprises everyone. So any help you can add/ also any idea for the best cam and heads to put on please let me know

What gear ratio are you looking for? Toyota made many from 3.42 to 4.10 that will fit in the 2wd housing.

I am looking for a good launch so like 3.43 gears but a pozi would be nice and I need a new diff due to it being damaged so i was trying to think of what would work. What is the stock gear ratio for the 86 2wd?

Toyota didn't make a posi that fit in the 2wd trucks. But they did make a 3.42 gear ratio rear end.

There were 7 possible gear ratios for the 86 2wd truck; 3.07, 3.42 (turbo 2wd) , 3.58, 3.73, 3.90 (one ton single or dually) , 4.10 (one ton single rear wheels) and 4.30 (one ton single rear wheels)

IIRC the one ton dually used an 8" diff, VS the standard 7.5" 2wd.

I would think so. Find out what ratio you have & check Richmond Gear.

Swap a whole 8" axle and 3rd member in and add a locker - but you may be limited to 4.10's and lower...

just get a whole 8" rearend from the boneyard, then you can do what ever you want. you have a 7.5" rear now, so not a huge selection for gears and i don't think any LSD's or lockers
