Battery or Alternator?

Probably best to start by just cleaning everything off. Get all the sludge and corrosion out of there and wear gloves and eye protection. Acid deposits bite. Check all the connectors. Replace any that are real corroded. Clean the gunk off the alternator (don't use water based cleaning products- did that once and then I was DEFINITELY replacing things). And then see if it's still busted. If it still stalls when you pull the battery, you gotta bad alternator.

okay i tested everything...this part gets confusing...
got the battery all charged up---it was at 14.00v...i started it, and it dropped down too 12.30v and drooping .01 like every 2 seconds.
tested the alternator, it was puttin out around 10.33ish volts (wich is low right?)
drove it around for abot 30-45 minites and it started sputtering, my cb was getting dimmer and dimmer by the minite.
came home, tested the batter...it was at 7.90v steady. the alternator was putting out around 7.65v and it was jumping around +/- .10v...
after i tested them both, out of curuisoty, to see how it would effect the idle, i turned on the headlights...it stalled right away.
also, do you have to drain the coolent to remove the alternator?
thanks very much for the help everybody

if the charge light doesn't come when you start it, that could cause it not to charge . the light acts as a exciter circuit to energize the charging system. so you might check the bulb. if the front oil seal is leaking it can contaminate the new alt.

swampfox, im confused...what about the charge light??
but yeah my oil seal is leaking...not bad at all really, the majority of the oil is coming from the valve cover gasket

if your truck didn't come with a volt meter, there should be a warning light in the dash ,to let you know there is a charging problem. it should come on with the other warning lights ,when you turn the key on before you crank the engine. it should go out as soon as the engine starts.
