86 toyota 4x4 22r transmission swap help
I attempted to put a 1988 4x4 22r manual transmission
into my 1986 4x4 22r manual transmission.
I get about 1/2 inch and some bolt in top but I can get it all the way in.
Are the tranny's slightly different?
Any help would be beneficial.
thanks.

How can I find out which one I got and compare to that new one out of the 1988?
I looked on the internet and they said I might have a g52 or a g54 transmission for my 86 22r 4x4.

If you have a carburated 22r it is most likely a g52 or g54 transmission.
If the one from the 88 was fuel injected than it is a w56.
Im currently doing the same, swapping the old g52 in there for a newer w56.
One way to tell the difference between the two is that the g52 is forward shift while the w56 is top shift, so the transfer shifter is a little farther back. But 89-95 w56s were forward shift. Hope that helps. Post some pics!!

check the bellhousing for alignment pins. You probably have one stuck in the back of the block and one in the same place on the bellhousing of the new tranny. Remove whichever is easier to get out and you should be good. I replaced my G52 with a W56 and it went right in. Just gotta watch for those alignment pins.

thanks guys. Well, success! I got the transmission in place tonight and drove it home!
I have a carburated toy so It is probably the g52 or g54 like lancer said.
I think the new one is a W56 because the tranfer shifter is set back farther. I had to cut some floorboard out to get the transfercase stick in there.
The guys at www.mojooffroad.com helped a ton. I couldn't have done it without them.
They had a transmission key which set the spline perfectly so the tranny went right in.
16 hours later. done.
Know anybody that rebuilds them cheap? I am giong to keep my old one as a backup.
