what does it do? does it crank over and not run, or no cranking?

have you checked to verify you're getting spark at the plugs when it wont run?

do you smell fuel?

have you checked your timing?

could be an issue with injectors as well.. have you done any recent engine work, removed the injectors, unplugged injectors, etc?

how many miles?

If you have fuel in the Fuel Rail and Spark, then its either Cam timing or Dist timing. Sometimes them dampers on the front of the motor will get stuck and not keep the chain tight causing the chain to jump a tooth.

Having similar problem. About one time in 200 truck will not start. No spark. Am I correct to think the igniter needs to be replaced?
Chris7, where is that relay located? What do they call the part?
Thanks for your help. Last time it did this I was 18 miles from no where. I got a major panic attack.

The relay he is referring to is most likely the EFI relay located under the hood in the fuse box. I would see if it does it again, just pull out the relay and put it back in. or swap it with another close relay.

Hey I was just looking around and stumbled upon this post. Ive got an 89 V6 pickup that was doing the exact same thing, but now I cant get it started at all. I've replaced most of the simple things (coil, cap, rotor, wires, plugs, and the EFI fuses and relays all check out ok) I was thinking it might be the igniter, but I was curious if you ever got to the bottom of this problem bhatch. I certainly know your frustration.

Frustrating thing is when mine runs it runs like a demon. No problems at all, real smooth, no problems accelerating, doesn't feel starved for fuel or anything like that. Did you have problems trying to get yours started after it had ran for a while then sat for maybe 30 minutes...like just enough time to get stuck for a few hours in a parking lot after going grocery shopping? I had a problem a few years ago when it would start really rough- starved for fuel. Turned out to be the opening circuit relay for the EFI system located next to the glovebox.

pattymac... pull the air intake hose going from the air filter to the throttle body and check for cracks or splits.

whitebullet, have you checked to see if you are getting fire to the plugs? what about fuel to the injectors?
