1987 Runner Thermostat orientation?

Hey guys,

Pretty emberassed I need to ask this, but I need to know how the thermostat is supposed to be orientated in the water outlet (ie. which end goes up and which goes down?).

After a recent water pump and thermostat replacement, I forgot to take a good look at the thermostat before I pulled it out of the water outlet. Afterwards, I took the truck for a drive up to operating temperature. After I parked it, I noticed he water pump was VERY hot, and the radiator was cold to the touch. Thus, I am thinking my thermostat is either not working or installed incorrectly.

Can anyone tell me, or better yet, show me a photo of how the thermostat is supposed to be orientated? Once I know if it is installed right, I will pull it out and test it.

Thanks
