What is the 4WD System in this new version?

Do you have to shift into 4WD (like the old V6) or it is permanent All Wheel Drive (like the old V8)?

In the 4th gen 4runner, the v6 is paired with selectable 4wd, the v8 is full time 4wd.

What are the technical specs on that system?

EG Can you shift on the fly? Is there a speed limit? Are there options for true 4X4? Or is it a "front left/rear right" w/ limited slip system? Is there downhill acceleration control? Etc...

I must have mis-read your question, somewhere I pulled 4th gen into this. I have no idea on the 2010/2011's.

Yes 5th. I believe the limiteds are full time 4wd while the others are done with a dial from what i can tell.

Is there anyway to tell on-line?

I really prefer a FULL TIME All-Wheel-Drive System and not having to worry about/deal w/ shifting.......AWD is for more than just snow driving.

I think the rule has been that V8 is full time and V6 is part time.....

OK I just read somewhere that the Limited is Full Time for 2012 and the SR5/Trail is Part Time........

They don't even offer the F/T AWD system in the Sequioa - doesn't make any sense to me.......

I can only speak from experience owning a 4 gen 4 Runner. I believe it's a question of where Toyota wants to compete and the economics. Offer a 4runner in AWD with all their models, and they compete with themselves with the Highlander. The 4Runner is an off road towing vehical in the medium duty range in which there is less competition. That, plus traction control in 2 wd has rendered most normal performance in awd advantages, redundant. Even in 2 wd in snow, I am very capable. Traction and stability control is a great substitute for running around all the time in gas hogging awd mode. If mine were suddenly without the awd feature but had part time only with traction control in 2wd, I would not miss the awd feature that much. If I wanted an awd car, I would have a RAV or Highlander. The only distinct advantage, is having awd with low range capability for towing my boat on dry pavement loading ramps and not worry about binding.
