Exhaust: TRD vs Borla

Exhaust: TRD vs Borla
I just got the 4Runner in my sig and want to do an exhaust immediately. I'm looking at both the TRD and Borla setups, and while they're both pricey, I like what I see. Does anyone have any pictures and/or experience with these systems, or any recommendations on another system? Thanks.

glad to see you found the place... I should get a referral fee!
I am a fan of borla, I'll see if I can find a sound clip...
http://www.demello-offroad.com a member here works there check it out. They offer some of the other parts you are looking for.
I couldnt find much from a search, it seems you got JBA, Magnaflow, Borla, & TRD to choose from.

From the picts I've found the TRD system is a dual outlet, one behind each rear wheel. The magnaflow system looks nice, too, with a dual outlet on the passenger side.
Does the TRD system reduce ground clearance, or hit the spare tire, or anything like that? It would seem to me, at first glance, that the dual outlet out one side is a better design, but then I can't think Toyota would design a system for their own vehicle that wouldn't work just right.

Pulled the trigger on the Magnaflow system since it cost 1/2 what the TRD system did (got it for $380 locally). Bought a cat-back for the wife's F-150 with the money I saved! I'll post some picts after I install it this weekend.

Koz, I used to can write a thread and reply....I don't know why...I'm blocked there so I can't ask anything...I have same nick name over there...
Anyway...Can't remember which thread but I watched someone's video about his magnaflow and supercharger. after he turned corner and as he speed up I hear loud muff sound from video clip...can you remember which one I'm talking about???
question are ;
1. has anyone drove break-in period? what's sound like?
2. Like in video clip...is really that much loud, hearing from inside?
3. Magnaflow, for 06' V8 4runner, is it only comes size of 24"? ( I may pay visit to their website, I guess).
4. after installed magnaflow cat-back system, how do you keep your original system?
Thx for read and anwser my questions.

2. An aftermarket exhaust will always be louder because it's less restrictive. It will be quieter in the car than outside, but it's still louder. I have a 440 (flywheel) horsepower mustang, so I know all about loud interiors...
3. If you talk with a magnaflow dealer I'm sure they can work out whatever size muff you need.
4. Not sure I understand this, as the point of the cat back is to replace that portion of the stock system. You keep everything forward of the flange connection after the last cat. The rest goes to the recycler.

2. The Magnaflow system is middle of the road as far as loudness. JAOS is on the quiet end and Borla + TRD would be more towards the louder end. The more back-pressure (quieter) systems will provide less HP gain. The less back-pressure (louder) systems will provide more gain.
3. The Magnaflow cat-back system (for the V8 +V6) comes with a 24" muffler. I think the confusion is that some owners are measuring the muffler body only (which is 18") and 24" from end to end.
4. I hung mine up in the garage with a rag stuffed up both ends. The OEM system is stainless (not sure about muffler) also but it still will rust.

Does the TRD system reduce ground clearance, or hit the spare tire, or anything like that? It would seem to me, at first glance, that the dual outlet out one side is a better design, but then I can't think Toyota would design a system for their own vehicle that wouldn't work just right.

I was actually pleased with the TRD dual exhaust on my Tundra, so I ordered the TRD for my '03 4Runner -- I ordred it when I bought the vehicle and even had the dealer install it. BIG WASTE OF MONEY. I ended up taking this expensive exhaust to an exhaust shop and having them change it. I had them convert to a single outlet just behind the passenger rear wheel (just like the Magnaflow -- except one big tip instead of 2 smaller ones) -- anyway, that preserved the sound, eliminated the clearance problem -- and here's the biggy: it completely eliminated the annoying drone I got between about 1800 and 2200 rpms. The end result I really liked, but it cost way too much money. (I actually had them make it so that I could unbolt the custom piece and reinstall the TRD pieces from the muffler back).
Well, I traded in that vehicle for an '05. For the new 4Runner I just got the Magnaflow. I ordered it online and will install it myself (haven't gotten around to it yet). But, for about 1/3 the price I'm pretty sure this is the way to go -- and, it gives me the improved clearance rather than messing it up like the TRD dual does.
Now I really can't speak directly for the Borla, but my understanding is that it's about the same as the TRD. If you don't care about clearance then either the TRD or Borla is probably ok, but since you asked -- I'd go with Magnaflow.

Elton, you could spend money on a "custom" cat-back but to beat the price of the Magnaflow, it will be crunch bent instead of mandrel, and probably not stainless as well. You end up spending money for something that will probably be worse than stock, only louder. If you spend any money on an exhaust, spend the extra it takes for mandrel bent stainless steel.
