4th Gen wheel/tire setup - IS ANYONE RUNNING 285's W/O RUBBING
Is anyone running any combination of tires/wheels/lift with 285/70/17's on a 4th gen sport without rubbing?
Burtman says it will work with the 3/2 and I can't seem to get without removing the mudflaps major cutting and flatening part of the frame.
One shop I spoke to said it is because the offset is different. Stock is 17x7.5 with omm offset and 4.5 BSM. I have tried 17x8 -4 offset and 4.25 BSM. I though that the increase by 1/2 inch in rim width would be compensated for with the 1/2 inch decrease in BSM and the I am just looking at the difference in offset. According to an offset calculator I am only extending 10mm (less than 1/2 inch) out from the rotor over stock. I thought that would be enough to keep me from rubbing the upper control arm (which it did). But now I am rubbing by the outside bolt on the mudflap.
Does anyone know a way to make this work or is Burtman wrong and you just can't run 285's without surgery?

Most will rub. Have you tried spacers to move the wheels out a bit further? I imagine you might be rubbing in several places so depends upon where specifically you are rubbing as to a solution.

Speaking from the 05+ Tacoma angle, there's definitely rubbing with 33's and a 3" lift. It's not that bad, but front mud flaps are gone, and plastic in fender had to be trimmed up several inches. Even so, I still get occasional rubs on the plastic when I hit a hard bump at full turn.

I think that the 275/70's look plenty big. I just did the 2.5" daystar and got a set of Revo 265/75r16s and they look good, fill the wheel well without looking stuffed. Now I want to get new rims so the wheels/tires stick out a little further. If i go with a 4.5" backspacing with 0mm offset am I going to stick out any further than stock or not? If not what offset/backspacing do I want?

Take a look at this calculator. http://www.americanracing.com/techce...or/offset.html
What model do you have?
Sr5-16 x 8, 0 offset, 4.5 backspacing
Sport & Limited- 17 x 7.5, 0 offset, 4.5 backspacing
Assuming you have the Sr5 based on your 16's you will be the same.
If you have a limited or sport you will extend 6mm from the rotor.
(of course I am also assuming you are running a 16x8)
With my 17x8 with -4offset I am extending 10mm which is flush with the fenderwall. You have to remember the stock wheels really sit flush against the upper control arm. I would think if you stay with a 0 offset you will need to use a wheel spacer to get them to extend past the fenderwall.

I was on a website that sells new replacement factory wheels and they show the stock 16" SR5 wheel being 7" wide. http://www.wheecollision.com/toy1.htm
Are you sure it is 8"? I see alot of guys running 16x8 4.5" backspacing 0mm offset and they apper to stick out further than stock.

The wheel on the FJ is a 7.5 as well, I am not sure what the offset is though. I do know that a shop I spoke to in San Diego told me they did a 3/2 lift on an FJ and had no problem fitting 285's. But they also said that the FJ has more space in the wheelwell.
Anyway here are the specs:
