I have the same problem; gauge will not work. Removed the sensor/switch on thermostat housing but parts store says sensor is "coolant fan switch"! Last time I looked, the 87 does not have an electric cooling fan. Manual says the temp sender switch is on side of engine close to starter. Still too cold outside to go take a look. It is a gruesome 65 deg F here in Phoenix
