Really.
I have never replaced it.
You mean there is more than one?!?!
My temp gauge quit working.
I have been getting mixed advice about the location. I am told that the little plug over the thermostat is the temp sending unit. But the FSM says it's for the Engine Control Unit.
I have been searching the forums for quite some time. (Even useing Google's "advanced search") to no avail.

The one for the gauge is on top of the manifold and between #2 and #3 cylinders. This should roughly (maybe +/- 1 CM) be the same location for all 22R/RE engines. Below that sensor (and on the bottom of the manifold) is the coolant passage to the heater core in the cab.

on earlier models there was one in the t-stat housing, SUCH AS AN 85
differend intake setup; the pics above are from a later modle 22re
BUT, I don't thinkg that's the sender for the gauge anyhow, lol
but the housing are interchangable, cause I use one of these on my 91 and adapted a temp probe to it, lol... it was a horrible idea the gauge didn't register until the engine heated up
