Hey all I have a 22r that I'm doing a complete rebuild on. Killed the engine with 100k miles on it....... water pump broke and I wasn't paying attention to the temp gauge. Anyways I was removing the rings from the pistons to clean them and check if they were still usable - they all were within the specifications that Toyota said the rings had to meet. I broke the second compression ring on the third piston while taking it off... That was the only ring I broke. I live in San Diego, CA and was wondering where I could get that one ring or maybe a complete set for one piston- checked with some local auto parts stores, and they would cost around $60 for the complete set- all new rings for all the pistons. $60 is wayyyy to much in my opinion to pay for breaking one ring. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

x2 you don't want to re use rings, and you should re hone the cylinders

already honed the cylinders, but I don't want to spend too much on the rebuild...And if the rings are still within the specs of .014 in. then they should be re-usable. Right?

Sorry man I would have to say you would be dumb to not replace them.

Piston rings are a one use deal. As are bearings (rods, mains, thrust washers) and timing components, yes even the chain, and even if it "checks out"

Get your crank turned as well, and have the rods checked.

You'll like me later when your engine still runs like a top 300k later

I completely agree, your old rings have been wore to match the old cyl walls. If you replace the old ones back in to the newly honed cyl walls you risk having major blowby and compression issues, leading you to tear apart the motor again. I second the http://www.engnbldr.com/ rings.

x5, I agree with all the above, it might seem like more money now, but you really will thank yourself later, the motor is already apart might as well spend a little more money now than regret it later. You'll feel better knowing you got it right the first time!
