where is the coil on my 1994 22re?
hey guys, ive got a rough idle that smooths out once you gove it some throttle. ive looked at tps and egr and throttle body and timing and the vacuum lines and i think ive narrowed it down to a bad coil but i cant find the dang thing. Also is there a primary coil and a secondary coil? if so where are they located. thanks for the help. i love yotatech.

Follow the only wire from your distributor that is not going to your spark plugs. I dont think your coil would have any effect on that btw.
Only heard of one coil going out and ive been turning wrenchs for a while..

Well if its not the coil then I don't know where else to turn. It doesn't feel like its about to die and it doesn't really feel like its down on power( not any more than usual). Its just seems like it idling rough. Almost like its got a big cam in it if you get what I'm saying. I guess ill give everything a once over again. I just feel like I'm chain my take, running around in circle and not getting anywhere.

I haven't heard of them going out too much on 22re's. But they happen pretty frequently on other cars, and a rough idle is a symptom of a bad coil. Water and age and cause them to act up. They are fairly inexpensive, so you might as well get one anyways.

I'm with Brysawn, it very well could be a coil and they aren't that expensive. As far as checking the timing, a quick google and this is what I came up with. Though, timing lights arent that expensive, its probably worth the investment since I'm sure you'll use it again in your lifetime.

I thought there was a method that involved spraying soapy water on it, but that may have been for a coilpack.
Or to what ebrake92 said: for the amount of times you'll use a timing light you should probably just buy a harbor freight one: http://www.harborfreight.com/catalog...q=timing+light
but there are also ways to correct your timing without a light.

Well I went out and checked my coil and its good( I'm at work right now, pullin that graveyard. I'm a water treatment plant operator). And I was running through the options in my mind and got to thinking about the idle. And that there must be an idle adjustment screw. So I got my haynes manual and found it. I found that the screw was bottomed out, and something clicked and I wondered if the idle was set to low. So I gave the screw a half a turn and the stumble cleared right up. It might be a temp fix but for right now she's runnin better than she has in months.

only problem i've had with the idle screw was when the person before me had it opened up to much 1700 at idle just wasn't right. I don't know what that guy was thinking.

If you changed your sensor and getting the same problem, I would suggest checking your Plug connection. Is it corroded, getting a good clean connection?

Did you ever have the VAFM (it's not a MAF) off? If so, did you remove the screws to it? Great way to tear it up~ It has to be removed by raising the little metal clip....
I'd guess there's some type of issue with the wiring to your VAFM.

Yes I replaced the air flow meter coming off the air box. The other one was in pieces. It will start fine run for 2-3 seconds and then die. I checked all the vacuum hoses looked at all the electrical connections(not my strong suit). I reckon I'm gonna have to take somewhere, because I'm getting no where.
