transfer case oil seal replacement

transfer case oil seal replacement
the transfer case on my '94 runner (v6/5spd) has developed an oil leak
after checking exploded view of transfer in FSM it appears the culprit is
the rear companion flange oil seal...does anyone have expertise on replacing this seal ??.. if so are there any tips, tricks or warnings I should be aware
of ??... also will there be any impact to gear lash of pulling and replacing the
companion flange ?...
Thanks in advance...jd94

Hmmm, from what I can remember, you need to get a new nut along with the seal from the dealer cause you have to stake the nut lip to keep the nut from walking out.
Basically,
Keep the trans in first gear.
Block the front tires to keep the truck from rolling...or put the truck on jack stands. ( I didn't need to do that cause my truck is tall enough)
Remove the drive shaft. Take it out completely..make sure they don't come apart with out marking them. It needs to stay in phase.
Use an impact wrench to remove the nut...you'll have to straighten the nut lip first.
Remove the washer behind the nut.
Pull out the companion flange
remove the seal.
replace the seal..
reverse the rest..
Make sure you use new nut....torque to spec...90 ft lbs
I usually torque it then back off and retorque it again.
stake the nut.

thanks to anthony1
thanks for the tips Anthony, I will be ordering up new seal and nut soon, I did
not think it would be a difficult replacement but was unsure about the impact
(if any) on gear lash... thanks again jd94

I did the front t-case output seal last year on my truck. I don't have a torque wrench that goes that high, so I just used a breaker bar to get it nice and tight.
Be easy with the new seal, make sure you put some grease on the splines so you dont get leaks..

With a transfer case flange you don't have a gear backlash issue like you do with a differential. No preloads to set so just torque it to specs. I don't have an impact driver so I use a long 1/2" drive breaker bar with a two foot pipe over it to get the leverage necessary to break it free.
