Stalling an automatic 22RE

I don't know if this has been covered before, I just can't find anything about it. It doesn't happen on road too much but when I let off the gas a little bit, usually around a 90 degree turn, my truck just dies, so I have to quickly shift to neutral and TRY to start it. Last time it happened on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News, scary stuff. And when i go offroad at all, and I let off the gas it dies. Me and a friend counted it last time and I stalled an amazing 93 times. I don't want any speculation please as I've just had about enough of it. If it keeps going on I'll just start replacing things, and if someone can give me a good place to start it would be greatly appreciated. 1986 Pickup DLX 4x4 22RE auto.

I think my dad had that replaced when i first got it, its located on the passenger side wheel well? Brass colored cylinder thats easy to replace if you take the tire off? He did whatever that was, I was too busy welding the frame back together to pay attention to what he was doing to that.

the "main" one is bolted to the block, above the starter, and under the intake manifold, a MAJOR PITA to get too. Ive heard you can get to it from the wheel well so that could be it

someone has also told me, though i havnt confirmed this yet, theres one on pass. side rear frame rail. ive looked on both my trucks, and havnt found it

85gijunk4x4, do you have any description of the filter? This is my dd so taking it apart is not really going to happen unless i'm certain there is a fix. I've been putting in fuel additive of different kinds but no effect has taken place. I'm sure its a mechanical failure of some sorts but I can't seem to place it.

the one attached to the block, is (well mine was) black, has 2 bolts holes, and then 2 holes with banjo bolts, where the fuel lines are. kinda hard to explain, i'll check if i have my old one right now and if i do i'll take pics for you

no thanks for the pics, i definitely remember that, although it wasn't black, mine was a cheap napa part. thanks though, really it just leaves the pump and injectors.

ive stalled my 22re/auto out many times. mainly, my cold mstart injectors are bad, and when the trucks cold it wants to run like crap. it idles fine in park, but putting it in drive, and holding the brake makes it want to stall. also, coming up to a stop sign, and braking makes it want to stall, so i usually shift into "N" and brake with my left foot, and rev the engine with my right foot

its bassicly any time the engine is under load that it wants to stall, for example, driving uphill in a gear that makes the engine struggle, creeping around offroad resting your foot on the brake, or even going slow and then punching it.

if yours is anything like that look into the cold start injectors. ive been fighting with them on my 85 for as long as i can remeber

I've heard a lot about the cold start injectors, but I personally don't know enough. But yea that sounds exactly like my problem. It even does it when i flip the lights on. I'm in the middle of looking for another truck, but its only if i can find one for the right price. I'd like to be able to spend the money to pull it back up to snuff, but i'm just starting to think this engine is just so far gone, and college bills so close. Ugh, decisions suck.

sounds like you have a wiring/ground problem if it happens when you flip the lights on.

once you find out what the problem is, its easy enough to find a fix for it on here. diagnosing is the hard part.

and if you want to sell your truck, let me know what kinda price your thinking

and dont waste your money on snuff, unless its grizzly LOL

OMG. You have no idea about the electrical issues. I spent the first week i had the truck re-wiring everything because the po was just stupid. An the fact that the engine is a rebuilt, with only 100k on it, and its in BAD condition. But idk, im trying to find an 85 4runner, maybe 22r maybe not. If i find it, ill just ask $1000 for the pickup. The body is real nice, so is the interior, no cracks, little rust, and i have put quite a few dents on the body from wheeling, but meh. If i can solve this, i might just keep it and buy a 4runner anyway.

Have you checked for vacuum leaks along the manifold or brake booster?

I've replaced every vacuum line, and put them back to the best of my ability, but i still have one or two plugged with screws, and the manifold is solid, the only weak link in the intake is the silicone hoses that i have. Mostly dry rotted, but i've patched them up with a silicone glue and rubber tape. I had the same problem on our protege, but because it was bad we replaced the hose. And i never would have thought about the brake booster. But i dont know if that would take much from the engine to induce a stall. Maybe offroad, but when it stalled before, i was in the middle of a turn, trying to make a light, i got to the turn but didn't hit my brakes, i just let off the gas and bam, stall.

That really does sound like a vacuum leak. The engine and brake booster shere vacuum, so any leak will affect drivability. I would start by checking a vacuum diagram to find out where those plugged lines are supposed to go, then spray starting fluid around all of the vacuum lines and manifold. When you hear the idle change you have found your leak. Good luck.

This is the best representation that I have. Even my fsm doesn't have this. But where the egr valve and the modulator are, i only have 3 lines instead of four. And i had pictures of the thing on my phone, but ugh, ill have to check tomorrow. But i do think i have a line coming somewhere from the passenger side from some unknown area, so i plugged it. This diagram is the closest i can get to what i have.
