Question on 22r build.
I have a 1987 sr5 pickup that somebody had swapped a 22r into place of 22re. i have been looking at a little more aggressive camshafts. To put in lets say a Crower Stage 2 cam would I need to change the valves, springs,guides,etc? I have been told different stories by a few people.
Also was wondering if an MSD, or Dui distributor was worth the money or not?

You can do what you want getting horsepower out of a 22R series engine is very expensive.
This engine builds horse power in the head .
Let us not forget the carburetor you have to deliver fuel to the engine
Lots of head work Over size valves along with all new valve parts springs etc
then you want port and polish
You might want to look into a complete head from Engine Builder with cam
Much cheaper then having your head built unless you can do the machine work yourself .
Then for it all to work 2.25" exhaust with a header
Sure you can install the cam with nothing more then a new head gasket but you will not really get any benefit from the cam
Then lets not forget the bottom end if your rings are on the way out getting lots of blow by any head work is just going to be a waste
Just what is your end use going to be off road crawler ??

Quite a few of us have tried this route kinda like getting married seems we all need to learn ourselves .
You might want to look at the expensive of this compared to a gear change or even doing a 3.4 or other engine swap .
Comes down to just what you want to end up with .

I have a 1980 20R and I put the Weber 38/38, a header and a DUI dizzy with E-3 plugs on it and nothing else. No cam, no bigger valves, etc. and I am happy with it. I just use it to drive maybe 30 miles to the deer lease and back so it doesn't see a lot of extreme off roading. It all depends on how much money you want to spend and how much power you need. Remember, these engines are not fire breathing dragons no matter what you do to them.

Thanks for the replies I'm not looking for anything too big. I have some sand dunes and a lot of mud bogging next to where I live. I know ill gain some of my power back once I redo my timing chain because its stretched to the max. as of now i am looking at opinions because I have two years until ill start the project because i am maintaining a Toyota Technician college course 250 miles from home. I will look into gearing, Carburetors, and maybe different ignition options hopefully that'll help her out enough. The engine is tight and clean other than my sloppy timing chain.
