Pings when I shift

Sometimes when I push the clutch pedal in to shift I will hear one ping when shifting out of the current gear I'm in and sometimes I will get the ping when shifting into the new gear. Any suggestions on what I should check out first? Thanks

is the ping the trow-out bearing going? or does it sound like its coming from under the hood? or is it coming from under you?

When I have my rear slider window open I hear it through that. Maybe under/behind me, but not in the motor.

um..... drive shaft nose maybe? cause pinging wont be shift related it happens when your timing is set way to far adv. and that comes from under the hood!

more like a clank? could be the shift fork hitting something? does it do it when its off or not rolling? if so then havbe someone go on and off the clutch when your under her to pin point the problem

Basically it would be a clang I guess. It does not do it when it is off and I have crawled under and had someone press the pedal in and out and still no noise. It seems that it would be comparable to not pushing the clutch in all the way when shifting, but I test it out by fully depressing the pedal all the way to the floor before shifting and it still sometimes does it. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like you have a bummed ujoint in your rear driveline. its probably the one right off of the trans thats doing it. Climb up under there and give the drive a shake. Any movement at all means you need to replace your ujoints.
Otherwise, I would look into the rear end, If you have a throw out bearing going out it would be a growl/humm coming from the engine area that is consistent with your clutch being put in or releasing it. If it was the trans, It will be consistent with a shifting pattern or a certain gear. The noise would come from your gear shift or from under you.
If you shift into gear, let the clutch out, and hear a ping then its a ujoint or a rear end problem. If you feel a vibration going down the road at 55 or more and it gets worse the faster you go, it would be a ujoint.

Err you may also have to remove the drive line and check out the ujoints by hand. they are better if they are stiff and if they flop around and are loose then you need to replace them or try greasing them to see if it helps.

Grease all the zerk fittings on the driveline. There are quite a few, 13 or something on the ex cab trucks... Some are hidden under skids...

Also check around the trans and engine and see if there is a hanger or something close. The engine and trans twist when under torque, then when you push the clutch you unload that torque and maybe something is getting hit when the eng/trans moves?

Thanks for all the helpful tips guys I went under and tried turning the drive shaft by hand and it turns back and forth about a half inch or so each direction, but the actual U joints don't seem to be wobbly or anything, it seems to be moving where it connects with the transmission and the rear differential. Could this still be U joints? I will try greasing all the zerks soon as well. Thanks again for the help so far. Also the engine doesn't seem to be shifting or loose or anything, but I will check further to make sure.

Update:

Ok, so I been testing a little bit and for example: When I drive in 4th gear and go about 45mph or so and then push in the clutch for about 5-6 seconds and coast and then shift into 3rd and let the clutch out kinda fast (I'm not popping the clutch or anything, just letting it out faster than normal) it makes the sound. If I give it gas while letting the clutch out slower, then it doesn't make the noise. It will do this for pretty much any gear change.

I'm having the same problem. I know I need to replace my u-joints. It almost sounds like it's the transfer case though.

If you shift perfectly you don't need the clutch.

My rear diff(I think) makes a light clang noise, maybe more of a 'tink' noise when I start from a stop or sharply accel/decel...it's inaudible over road noise so I usually only hear it when I start rolling...it's done it since I had the gears changed from 4:10 to 4:56, but it's been 20K miles and it hasn't gotten worse. No play in u-joints and diff/pinion rotational play is the same as every other truck I've checked...I'm not worried.

I would be willing to bet money that it is a grenaded ujoint...tested play in mine and seemed fine...got the dshaft out and only then could i hear/feel it was bad...same exact symptoms though...one end of the ujoint had not been getting grease because (im guessing) water got in it and there wasn;t getting any grease, so the pins where seized to the race and deeply pitted. Replaced, $25.00 and an hour later i was good to go.
