Ok I checked the oil today and again it was a little low, by low I mean about 1/2 way down the little cross-hatch things on the dip stick. There are ZERO leaks on the rig, the water looks fine and I can't see any smoke at all when it's running. It didn't do this before I switched to synthetic so I'm guessing the new oil is the culprit but I can't tell if it's burning/leaking/drinking/etc since there are no signs.

how many miles did the oil take to burn that much off. Thats about a 1/2 quart.

Believe it or not every car burns oil, and most manufacturers factory spec's are that a quart over 600-1000 miles(depends on the manufacturer) is within spec for burning oil.

Remember that when your piston goes up, and down in the cylinder it's designed to leave a thin coat of oil on the cyl wall for lubrication, that burns up with the fuel.

Hey mine does the same no leaks, no smoke, was going to post but you beat me. i also have a rebuilt motor. my guess was that its old and that's how it runs. well best of luck

It looks to be about 3000 miles since the oil change, so about a half a quart in that time. I do however warm the rig up every morning before I leave and do the same at the end of the day so it's at operating temp before I roll. I know I have lower compression in the back two holes (-10% from the front two) so that may be part of the problem. I'm really trying to gauge if this little 22re is ready for a rebuild or not...... I'd prefer not since I can't afford it right now.

So I'm guessing this is normal for a 23 year old motor with 182,000 on the ticker?

Could be rings, but 3000miles/half a quart.

I, too, I have been told and read that its normal, if not a good thing, for vehicles ,especially older ones, to use 1/2-1 quarts between oil changes.
Like MMA_Alex said, some gets left behind during the normal operations of the engine. The quantity depends on the manufacturer, age, usage, etc.

"good" like it's still going ot be ok for another 100,000 or "good" like I need to rebuild it but it's ok for now? Man I can't afford a rebuild.

my diesel burns about half a quart every 3000kms but when i put the winter synthetic in it has dont it as much..

that 22re still prolly has a good 60,000 -100,000 kms there TUFF engines!

you done front or rear main seals lately? From what I have read, you might not have leaks so to speak but do you have oil coating on the front of the timing chain, alt, water pump, or in the back by the tranny?

Go worry about something else. Your oil consumption is probably not a problem.

I wouldn't worry about 1/2 of a quart in 3,000 miles. In many engines this would be considered perfectly normal. Some engines burn more than others. As long as it's not smoking or leaking I would say that it's just fine.

I did the front main several months back to stop an oil leak but since then there's been nothing. No oil coating anywhere, the motor is as dry as the desert that I wheel in. So is the tranny, t-case, diffs, everything. When I do my monthly cleaning I can run a rag over the entire drivetrain and come back with nothing but dust and a little bit of grease from the zerks.

I guess it's burning it.
