It's been a while but I don't think you advance it a tooth at all when setting it up - I think you line up the dot/bright link, then use the punch/hole method to twist the cam gear (with the chain fully engaged on the sprocket) until it snugs onto the camshaft itself. I think this is where you got it off a tooth. Now when it's lined up dot/link up top, you'll be off on the crankshaft gear/chain, but you can't see that since the timing cover is back on I think you may need to take the cover off again to be sure but let's let some other experts jump in to weigh in.....

When mine had the issue I could not even time it since it didnt' stay on long enough - would start, bog at idle, bog some more, then die within less than 1 minute.

Good luck!!

AHhhhhhh! i understand you now.. Man that sucks I have to tear it down. Oh well lets hope it helps it. Do you think if I put the engine TDC. Then moved the chain to where it originally was on the cam. Everything would be lined up again? Without taking the cover off? I understand now for sure though.. thanks.

Will do... I can almost swear i was looking for info and the info i found they instructed me to take the cam gear off and rotate the chain on the gear. I might try and hunt up that info again.. cause i remember the guy stateing... "you can do this carefully by just removing the valve cover and carefully taking the cam gear off and rotating the gear clockwise into the chain"

so it is as simple as installing everything. using the punch/hole method to rotate the cam counterclock wise until the chain is tight on the drivers side. and that is all?

I'd say pull everything and start over.
like you hadn't even done it once.

thats the plan.. hope to start on it tomorrow. But I will still have that same amount of slack on the drivers side. I dont completeley understand what it to be done with that slack. Maybe Advanve gave me the wrong chain? Should I compare it to the chain i look out to see if it is a lot longer? Phil said he didnt have the slack that I did.

What you're suggesting is logical, but I'm with the "do it right" idea instead. I know, it sucks, but at least you'll KNOW it's on there right.

I had to re do my timing cover less than a year after doing the chain - twice (once for the chain issues and once for a coolant issue). It's a PITA, but you actually get good at it the more you do it and it gets done faster.

It sucks....especially in the cold! But you'll thank yourself for doing it right later (and you won't risk bending valves on this interference engine!).

Check out 92 TOY's writeup in his signature - lots of photos and very helpful.

Good luck!

Phil
