New Tail Pipe and Hanger Install Questions

My mechanic advised me that my tailpipe is gone and needs replacement - i think he left it for me to do as it should be fairly easy. Anyways, its a 1990 4Runner 22RE. He handed me one rubber insulator which I believe is from the very back. So I went to RockAuto and they seem to have all the parts except for the main tailpipe. They have the clamp to the muffler (35343) as well some hanger parts that theoretically go at the back (35702 and 35199). All the parts are Walker. Looks like I can get the Walker tailpipe (44450) from elsewhere. A couple questions I have (I have searched the forum and got a little bit of insight but not totally).
  1. Is Walker brand decent and as good as any or should I be considering something else?
  2. Am I correct to assume that those two hanger parts I mentioned above go together on the end of the tailpipe? One is a simple clamp that would go around the tailpipe and the other more expensive piece is a c-shaped bolt that I assume bolts into the simple clamp going around the tailpipe? I did find a picture (evidently from an older vehicle) that showed this sort of arrangement,

On my 86 truck it's one rubber hanger that the tail pipe bracket rod that slips into on one end with a pipe clamp on the other end. Looked up 1990 4Runner on a parts page and looks to be the same design.
I installed a one piece Bosal muffler/tail pipe exhaust. It has the flange to bolt to the Cat Conveter, the 2 hangers rods welded on place behind the muffler. Is does drone a bit at highway speed. It fit perfectly and was only $115 in 2019.

This is what the hanger bracket looks like on 85 to 95 4Runner . The end with the bent down portion slips into the single rubber hanger.
The threaded end slips into the hole in the tail pipe clamp .

Walker are good. They've been around for a long time. They probably supply the major manufacturers. I doubt that GM manufactures their own exhaust pipes.

Go to the Walker site and it has a schematic of all the parts and hangers. Amazon's search feature is not good with car parts so I entered each piece's part number and got everything for about $160. Since I have Prime that big old catbach muffler and tailpipe was shipped free and it was pretty fast. The 89 's Walker system was replaced in fall of 2016. It sounds factory and it's not rusted. I went throught the same ordering thing with son's now sold '98 Tacoma and it worked out the same. He formerly had an exhaust leak and the new muffler was a huge improvement. https://www.walkerexhaust.com/find-my-part.html

When I replaced my tailpipe on my 86 22r pickup, I used the Walker pipe for the V6 pickup. It is a little larger in diameter than the original. I grabbed a clamp kit, used to cover a small hole in your pipe, off the shelf at a parts store. I was able to attach it to the original hanger. I slipped the new pipe over the muffler outlet and clamped it in place. Then, I took it to a muffler shop and they welded the pipe to the muffler.

I replaced my entire system. I used a Bosal headerpipe, quality seemed decent. The muffler and tailpipe is Walker. The metal is thinner than OEM, but still seems pretty good. Sound resonation is pretty close to what I'd expect. The catalytic converter is Magnaflow. My only thought on this is hang onto your oem converter as long as possible. If you ever replace your exhaust system and toss the old one, at least keep the converter. It's not full of precious metals, but you'll never find another converter remotely close to the quality as the oem.
I got everything with bolt-on flanges so I can easily take apart and reassemble without using a muffler shop. Was quite happy about that when I decided to rebuild the transmission and transfer case.

i've replaced the entire exhaust on both of my '87s, from the manifold back. i used bosal flanged components for all, except for the cat, which was davico. decent quality, fits pretty good, and i like the ability to replace parts without a welder/shop, too. they don't last anywhere near as long as the oem, but they are a fraction of the price, and available. in fact, i'm on my second complete system (minus the manifold and converter) on my red '87, which i bought in 2013. bosal both times.

edit: found an old photo from the 1st time i replaced the exhaust on '87 #1:

Can't get tailpipe

I just can't find/get the tailpipe. I have got all the hangar and clamp parts from Rock auto, however no one seems to have the walker 44450 tailpipe or any other brand for that matter. Everyone says the walker is unavailable or discontinued. Any suggestions?

If you want your muffler to last, DO NOT buy a Walker. Mine started rattling just a few months after installing it. I removed it and cut it open and was shocked at what I found. It was a 2.5" muffler but it was reduced to 1.3" and the reducers were just pressed in, not even spot welded (the source of the rattle). Also, it is only a single wall body and there is NO sound-reducing batting. I ended up replacing it with a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler that was as big as I could fit, I think it was an 18" body. It sounds way better and isn't restrictive. Just remember, you get what you pay for ($20 for the Walker vs. $60 for the Dynomax).

Worst case get it with the muffler attached, It's welded. Last time I checked it was still available. I have had it on my '89 since 2016 with no leaks or problems. We also put a Walker system on the '98 Tacoma and it performed just fine but that truck is now sold. I think we had it for 3 years with the Walker.

So you have the muffler, and just need the pipe? A muffler shop should be able to bend one pretty easily, especially if they have the old one to copy.

Still no luck on finding a tail pipe. The Walker 44450 isn't available anywhere I can find (incl o'reilly, amazon etc etc). Seems that it has been discontinued. Very frustrating, can get the v6 one but not the 4 cyl. finally went to my neighbourhood muffler shop - they confirmed they cannot get the pipe but said they would make me a tailpipe for $285. What da? I don't seem to have much choice at this point - checked ebay and everywhere I can think to find this tailpipe. Also, looked for a part that had more components (eg. muffler and tailpipe) - no such luck.

I haven't fired up a torch in more than 40 years, but my bro has the stuff as well as my best friend, so I think I'd buy some pipe curves, bends, and straights and get a pipe cutter and go to work on their driveway one Saturday morning before I'd pay $285 for a tailpipe. Have you shopped around for a different muffler shop?

I spray my new Bosal one piece muffler/tail pipe with 2 coats of high heat exhaust manifold paint on the outside and up inside the outlet pipe as much as I can. They seems to last 10 plus years and the muffler goes before the tailpipe.

Yes, i guess I should check with a second muffler shop. The quote came from what is supposed to be one of the best and well respected shops in the area. Just seems a little steep when I had thought I could get the tail pipe (if it were actually available) for $50-$75.

This tailpipe replacement has turn into quite something. I have yet to find a replacement for it. As the Walker part does not seem to be available anywhere and yes, have been into o-reilly to see if they had any other brands - nope. So what I am wondering now is whether the tailpipe for the Toyota pickup of similar vintage might be workable? In particular Walker part #44363. Any ideas anyone? Perhaps it goes to back rather that out on the side behind rear wheel but maybe it could work? Anyone happen to know?

I punched Walker 44363 into google and Amazon came up with 18 of them. The cost is $31.53 and shipping is free. I replaced both my '89's exhaust and my son's 1st gen Tacoma's exhausts by tediously googling each part. They are both a mixture of Walker pieces from Amazon and eBay. I don't think either cost more than $150 all told. Use google with part numbers to save money.

Edit: I think you are wondering if 4463 fits. It says it doesn't. You should have posted the part you need. Walker has a catalog with all the part numbers that fit. I suggest you google the part numbers. Some rando on eBay might have one in his garage.

yes, can find the 44363 but noone seems to have the particular one (44450) that is for my vehicle. It seems to be discontinued
