Muffler/Tail Pipe replacement

So, Monday I was inspecting my muffler and tail pipe so I could patch a few known holes. 94' 22RE Pickup. All it took was me looking at it for the muffler and back to fall off. So, I need to replace these two pieces. Is this called "catback"? Anyway, I called a local shop and they wanted over $200 to install the muffler and tailpipe. Not happening. Is this something I can do without welding? Parts seem to be a total of $50. Inspection of the cat and forward exhaust system look fine. I would appreciate any input or help. Thank You!
Andrew

ps, I searched and did not find the relevant info needed, it was all modifications and such. Perhaps I used the wrong terms.

In the last year, I bought one piece factory fit mufflers with tailpipes for both my trucks, off Ebay for less than $100 each, shipped. Bolt on and use the factory hangers.
The one for my '95 was manufactured in the Philippines, and the one for my '87 turned out to be a Walker, made in USA.
Amazon has deals sometimes too.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll look into that. Fortunately, the muffler slid off the pipe so, it looks to be in good condition. Just needs a scrubbing. The current hangers were welded on. Is there a different type available?

Sounds like your exhaust has been modified from stock.
All the factory type stuff is bolt on and mounted to the truck with rubber isolators.
I guess you could go either way- back to stock, or have whatever you want welded in.

The rubber isolators are still there and good. The hangers appeared to be welded to the piping.

The muffler/tailpipe combos I bought, had the hanger rods already welded to the assemblies.

I've had bad luck with bolt-together systems and will only go with welded from now on. I just did a full system header-back for this price:

Spun cat: $50
Magnaflow 18": $75
Shop fees (labor, 2.25" pipe, flange to bolt to header pipe, welded hangers): $120

You should be able to find a non-stainless turbo muffler (magnaflow knock-off style) for $30 bucks and have a shop bend pipe and weld it together for under $100.

That puts me way above the budget I have. But, I do appreciate the input. Thanks.

Go to some local shops, don't call for an exhaust quote. They quote it high because their not sure what you have. If your really cheap take to to a local community college automotive course and have the kids weld in a new exhaust for just the cost of parts.

^^^ this, plus be sure to buy a muffler on your own, not through a shop. every shop in town around here charges around $150 for a generic aluminized turbo muffler, not even a real stainless magnaflow. the mark-up is ridiculous.

Sounds like the right course of action to me! Thanks

That was just a joke about taking it to the college. That's what I went through during high school, they do work on peoples cars, but most don't know what they are looking at. And nothing is covered if something happens to your vehicle.

We've got a well known auto diesel college less than a mile up the road. Funny thing is, you go past it and it's a real campus. Dorms and everything. I may look into it. Otherwise I'll see if one of the muffler shops will weld on my parts.

man, having a shop work on your rig must be cheap outside of CA - no way a shop around me will do an exhaust for only $100. heck, every single shop that quoted me wanted at least $40 just to weld on one o2 sensor bung (post-cat).

my exhaust was pretty much in same condition, swiss cheese falling apart, then someone stole my CAT and I was forced to address the issue. was planning to just replace with one of those cheap sub$200 stock replacements like some here are suggesting but decided to just spend a little more and have a custom welded exhaust installed - because I also didn't like the idea of those bolt-together exhausts. eventually they will leak and give headache. My exhaust replacement cost me $500 but that included a Magnfaflow CA-legal CAT and Magnaflow muffler.

i have heard those replacement exhausts are decent though for the money and definitely make it an easy repair. Unless you find a shop that works for basically free, I'm guessing the stock replacement is your cheapest/fastest option.

In damp parts of the country, and where road salt is used, anything but stainless steel will have a limited life.
Where I am in the warm, dry southwest, even a cheapie exhaust might be expected to last 10 years or more.
The factory exhaust on my '87 lasted more than 25 years.

Hey, that's where I went to college! Graduated in 2001 when it was still Nashville Auto Diesel College. They did good work back in the day, and was always supervised by the instructors. We did a lot of work on the locals cars.
