Knocking noises at initial start

Seems like I may have a problem, least of all it annoys the hell out of me and i want to get it fixed.

When I start her up, more prominent when the engine is cold, it sounds like a dry knock that is there for less than five seconds and then goes away. I had a tech at my work listen to it and he said it might be the lifters and not enough oil on a cold start. However.. i was reading on here and i came up with some answers saying that a toasted water pump can make the same noise. Looking for some answers, I dont want to worry about this one when im doing the HG on the experiment truck.. BTW, 88 4runner 22re

Help would be appreciated

change your oil and put in some oil stabilizer, it makes cold starts easier. If that doesnt work, I would go the water pump route

Valves usually sound more like a "tick", than a "knock". It might be piston slap. If the skirts or cyls are worn, the piston can knock side to side until it gets hot and expands a bit. 269k km seems early for that, but depending on the service history, it's possible.

You could use a mechanics stethoscope to listen to the water pump - that will tell you whether that's the problem.

If you think it might be piston slap, you might try running Red Line 10W40 to see if that helps. Red Line is the "stickiest" oil I've found - it will keep more oil on the cyl walls overnight than anything else I know of. If it doesn't prevent the knock, at least it will help prevent additional wear.

Check the egr valve.

Mine does the same thing. More of a rattling type noise tho.

Edit: Nevermind. The thing that is rattling is not the EGR Valve. It is some other valve that sits on the pass side below the manifold. Looks like an egr valve? Now I gotta find out wtf this part is.

Anyone want to buy a brand new never used EGR valve? ugh.

I've got a similar issue, when I would startup my 22re cold or hot, you can hear a slight tickling noise, but then it soon goes away after start up. Recently I needed to change my main front seal, I also took the pump off to do so, after assembly I thought I was golden...not, now my motor makes the ticking noise all the time, copuld it be a plugged line or something? I'm lost

also remember, the 22re is a generally noisy motor compared to other vehicles.

yeah i would think that, but it doesnt do it even at a certain rpm or anything, just when it starts. then goes away, everything runs fine. talked to a guy at toyota, he said it could jst be the oil pressure building.

My freshly rebuilt 22re with new waterpump oil pump pistons and new head with valves does the exact same thing. I have new timing chain guides and tensioner as well. I have this exact problem. It makes the noise when you first turn it over weither hot or cold and then about two seconds later it stops. I was told it was a bad tensioner, But would like more info as well

I have the same thing in the 89 at 217,000 miles. At start up it "slaps" about twice and then goes away. I'm doing a sythetic oil change in the next few weeks and we'll see if it goes away.

Get a toyota brand oil filter....the tensioner on the timing chain is oil driven. I bet it's your timing chain slapping the case....until the tensioner gets oil pressure.....just my o2
