I need engine help
Thats right I'll show you some EX. G.F. junk if you can help me get this running..
First off thanks to all that replied to my last post. I ended up getting a 92 runner with a 5 spd. I dropped in the fresh rebuild and that’s when the nightmare got worse…..
So it won’t start…now in an attempt to get this beast going here is what I have come across,
1. Stinks like gas.
2. Timing wont stay put.
3. I’m running out of patience and tequila!!!!
I really need some help here I’m out of money and time. I need to drive this to Iowa for school that starts on 8-26…..
I have checked all the grounds and even tried using jumper cables to add more.
The 1, 3,5 plugs don’t look like they have fired and the 2,4,6 ones look like they have, also they stink like gas.
I have reinstalled the timing belt a few times and this is what I come up with every time.

cam timing a bit off id say huh? ok heres how i did mine, you need to set the timing on the cams a tooth past where you think they go, then turn the engine over about 4 times by hand and vowla, bingo timing is usually dead on...
oh and my first time timing my runner took 5 hours, so dont be upset about it

Ditto,
It took me 10 hours to change my water pump becuase of you guessed it the timing. Could they make it a bit harder? I got it right the first time but took me 10 hours to make sure I did.
So where's those boobies

Ok. so. Gas smell is because its attempting to start, with no fire. Thats why your plugs are soaked in gas. Since the timing is off, it won't spark.
Timing- The cam match marks should be straight up and down, with the crank set to 0 degrees (again, the matchmark.) Timing is SUPER easy on the 3VZ. Just match up the 3 marks, put the belt on, and VIOLA!
Now, you mentioned you have a 92. 5/92 they redesigned the tensioner assy from a spring type, to a hydraulic type. If you have the wrong tensioner in there, or are not even using a tensioner, it will cause the timing to jump.
What is in there now? The tensioner is the only thing that can even move, assuming the timing belt is the correct length.

link for said boobies pm'd
The runner is a 92 how ever the motor is from my 95 with a production date of I'm not sure (it's not here) all I put in was a long block. I used the fuel injectors from the 95 but I checked the part number to be sure there the same. I did line up all 4 timing marks as per the FSM.

What is the production date of your 92?
If its pre-may/92, then you had a spring type tensioner. If you installed that 95 engine without intalling the Fan support/Hydraulic tensioner from the 95, it will continue to jump time.
If it has the correct 6/92-95 hydraulic tensioner and all related pieces, you may have a failing/failed tensioner. And i know its a silly question, but (if you have a tensioner) is it screwed in all the way? It needs to be bolted down tight flush to the fan support.
