looking at a toyota 8722r and took it to a friends shop and the guy said he could fix the carb but the timing chain was making noise and he would have to take it off and see whats going on and there could be more problems. I would be trading for a S10 4x4 that runs good. WHAT DO I DO????

if toyotas are common in your area, id just look for a better one, or one that has had the timing chain replaced

Having to replace the timing chain in a toyota is a normal thing to have done after so many miles, if the rest of the truck is in good shape and it runs good otherwise, then buy it. you might ask the owner it he will pay half the cost to replace the timing chain.

There's a reason why people search high and low for 80's and 90's Toyotas. Its cause they're not made by GM.
Phoenix is 5th largest city in the US and I bet I could count 20 1979-95 Toyota trucks for every one S-10. Most S-10s have already been scrapped, shredded, sold to China and India and come back as Walmart patio furniture.

Agreed. My only reservation is that its not EFI. Fuel injection > carb

check everything over compression, under side, 4wd, trany, motor, and then go from there if everything checks out ok other then then carb and chain both very easy fixes then trade i had a 86 s-10 i had my fun then i got a real mans truck bigger with more room oh and its a drop top can your s-10 do that????

In that case, I would do as myyota and just a 22re suggested. That is, if the truck is something you'd REALLY like to have.

My '86 4rnr needed a new chain, radiator, valve adjustment, and a number of other things when I bought it. But, I knew what I was dealing with, really wanted it, fair enough price, and so I got it. I've done a lot of work (and now doing more) to it, but that's an older used vehicle for you.

I like EFI's better for a number of reasons, but there's beauty in the simplicity of a carb'd vehicle. The easier to troubleshoot and less costly to repair. EFI sensors can get expensive.
