Help identify burned wires under driver seat
#1
my 1990 4R resurrection
doing a bit of fun cleanup on my new baby and im seeing burned wires under the driver seat. They're going from the front harness to the rear of the car, they wrap around the outside in the rear of the car under the spare wheel. Wires are burned all the way, maybe water accumulated under the seat who knows.. I disconnected the harness under the seat and the fuel gauge went down, so thats one identified (somehow still working), what are the others for? My lights and everything else seems to work.

The "Frame wire" has a 14-pin connector (BG1), that is supposed to be under the passenger seat. Pin 9 (Y-R) goes to the fuel sender; pin 10 (Y-L) to the fuel "light."
The connector in your photo COULD be BG1, but it's not quite in the right place. So your rig could have been modified.
BG1 includes the backup lights, turn signals, brake lights, and tail lights.
Just so you know, I don't know of anyone who could look at a photograph of a piece of charcoal and identify that as a specific piece of harness. You could, for instance, give the number of pins the connector, and the wire colors to each pin. If you wanted that sort of help.

I might be able to rebuild the harness for you if you can't find a good used one. I haven't hopped onto the toyota harnesses yet, but I make ATV harnesses. I'd have to validate the exact year and make of your 4runner and probably have to download the EWD from the toyota TIS site and poke around to see if I can get the connectors new, or reuse the old ones with new wire/pins. Not sure how complicated the harness is, but I'd suspect the end cost would be around $200-350.
Also... I have a 4runner that might have the harness. It's turning into a trail truck/beater so don't really need the harness, I'll just have to wire up the fuel pump and fuel gauge. It's an SR5 truck, so it might have ABS.
Are there any numbers on the connectors? If it's there there should be 4 or 5 numbers in a row. Also that connector is not BL1 as photoed above, BL1 is a 10 pin, this one is the same style, but 8 pin (two on one side, single on the other for the top row). Currently I'm not stocked up on the larger gauges, or the Toyota wire colors so I'd have to see if I'd be able to cover all the others or not with my current funds. I use GXL wire with is great stuff normally used on injector harnesses (highest heat and oil resistances and such).
Besides replacing the harness, might want to find why it's been burned/melted. I've ran into similar issues with an 86 pickup tail light wiring, the wiring had bare wire for about 10 inches and sometimes would short out on the frame. The related fuse had copper wire wrapped around it. After insulating the wire and replacing the fuse, I had no more problems even though I need to replace that section of the harness some time.

i noticed the wire going to the seat belt is also destroyed, and its located right next to that harness, maybe something happened under the seat? Felt damp in the foam under carpet too, maybe related i dunno. I will check fuses thanks for the advise.
$250 is too much for me for this, keeping budget low. Was thinking picknpull for a few bucks but if you have one you want to part with?
Thanks!

Understandable on the price and budgeting.
I'd have to check if mine is the same, I'm not at where the 4runner is at currently so it will be a day or two before I can check. It's a 94 SR5 4x4 3.0L Automatic 4runner, just not sure if it has ABS or not. I wouldn't think the V6 would effect the tail light harness. If I have it, I'd be looking at around $100 for it. A pick and pull would probably be a little cheaper, so if you want to try them first it's completely understandable. Not sure if any are on ebay or not, might be a good spot to check as well.
I took a quick peek on ebay and didn't see the correct harness, a new oem toyota one was on there for $150 for a year older. Might be able to repin the 10 pin connector into your 8 pin housing if the other connectors all match up. New is a really nice option when it's exposed to the elements.

Thanks a lot for the resistor info, i will order.
well Looks like im not able to change the thread title name, oh well that wont stop me from whoring. Today she got 31s and new rims (no idea what they are but looks like i need matching lugs, another puzzle..), some black paint, and a new bumper. Shes like a new girl huh.

You knocked out her teeth you brute! Always thought I didn't care what grill and bumper style, guess I was wrong that just looks wrong to me today (yes today, I might change my mind tomorrow)
Ray pointed out my resistor choice might still be a little under sized. A safer choice would be the 40watt one, similar part number change the 20 to 40.
I think you should start a thread over in the build-up section. It's good to look back and see how far you have come, and a handy place to keep notes and random gibbering.
