Gas mileage is worse now?
I have an 88 4runner, 22re, and my gas mileage pretty much sucks. I put new spark plugs, new O2 sensor from the dealer and it got a lot better. I then decided to change out the fuel filter and now it is worse. i figured changing out the fuel filter would help but it made my mileage worse. does anyone know why this may have happened? it was done by my mechanic so i know it was done right. thanks

How are you figuring the mileage?
What is the mileage?
Have you kept records? You can't get an accurate display of mileage without an average over a length of time.
There's probably some other factor that's missing.

I just purchased a 1978 toyota pickup... I have installed new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, changed oil etc. and so far my best gas mileage is 17 miles per gallon. The rig has a 20r and I expected to see better gas mileage... So, like WhiteTaco, I am looking for advice on my options to improve the gas mileage...

I have 30x9.50x15 bfg m/t's
I was getting around 12 mpg and after the O2 sensor it went to around 16. I then decided to change the fuel filter and it dropped back down. I know an auto sucks down gas but this is ridiculous.

There are so many factors at play here. You need to be much more specific about actual mileage figures, over an extended period of time. I know my mileage (22R) has gone down about 2-3mpg this winter. How much difference are we talking here? And what about other maintence? Brakes, tires, dist cap/rotor, plug wires, etc etc

new radiator, thermostat, new spark plugs, thermo sensor, new belts, new tps, flushed transmission, front and rear diff oil, ranch aal, new dist cap, gapped valves, new fuel filter, O2 sensor, lc headers, fm 60 series exhaust, hi flow cat, 30x9.50x15 bfg m/t's, new dimmer switch, neutral safety switch, alignment, tires balanced and rotated, bled the brakes.
that is all i can think of right now. mine has dropped around 2-3 mpg as well so it might just be the winter fule like said above. i just felt like i got better gas mileage in the summer, that's all. this is just the first time i have really noticed it.

um I get 18 in my V6 Runner... so yeah 17 in a pick up sucks... The KS could be going out, and not yet turning on the check engine light, that is under the fuel injectors and could have been messed with.

Whitetaco, I can't explain what's causing you're horrible mileage, but you are correct that it should be MUCH better than that.
My stock '94 truck with 225/75 tires and 116,000 miles gets 24 MPG on every tank.
My '88 truck with 190,000 miles, 4.10:1 ring & pinions, and 36" Swampers gets about 18 MPG.
Both of mine are 22REs with 5 speeds.

one thing my dad did was adjust my idle where the FSM manual said to. When in neutral (without AC) it was around 1000 RPM's. his FSM said it needed to be around 750. is this correct? after adjusting to 750, when I put it in drive it goes to around 500-600 rpm's. does this sound about right for you all? thanks

My guess would be that the new fuel filter may be plugged up or that the line is blocked or there are deposits in the fuel system some were. Sediment stuff from the tank? I had this happen with a jeep i had. I had to get the fuel system flushed, and new filter again and injectors cleaned.
