Fuel filter (yuck) and a synthetic fluid swap done today.
I finally got some time to work on the rig and decided it was past due for a full synthetic fluid swap. So today I did the tranny, t-case and engine in Royal Purple. First thing I noticed was the shifting in the tranny and t-case is much smoother (the old fluid looked like coffee that had been on the burner all day) and the knocking sound I used to get at start up is gone. The engine would "slap" once or twice on a cold start after sitting all night, that is now gone.
I also figured that while I had the oil filter off I'd change out the fuel filter and although it only took me about 10 minutes to get the old one out and the new one back in took at least twice that long to get the damn fittings tight enough to stop dripping. I'm glad it's a "once in 100,000 mile" part because I don't want to fight with that thing again for a while.
All in all it was a good day for the ol' 4runner.

well I'm waiting on the clutch to come in, and I'm having the flywheel turned either tomorrow or Tuesday, so I'm dropping the long block in and then bolting everything else to it once it's in the truck. I have to get the borrowed engine hoist back to it's owner next weekend

Sounds like fun Junkers!! <sigh> I need to do my 2k miles head check and oil change...got family visiting so I'm at a standstill. I was tempted though to pick up the Royal Purple for the tranny...

What fluid did you get for the tranny? I just bought 3 qts of MT-90 for my tranny and i hear is makes shifting so much smoothier.
Thats great your slap is gone tho.

The motor oil is 10W-40, the tranny/t-case/diff are 75-90 severe gear with the recommended GL rating as per the owners manual.
The tranny is 75-90 severe gear. It made the shifting insane smooth.

I don't know what "GL" stands for (someone else may know) but I do have the owners manual sitting on the desk in front of me and it states (for an 89 4runner, 22re engine, 5 speed, 4x4).
Manual Transmission:
Oil capacity, qt. (Imp. qt., liter.)
3.2 (2.6, 3.0)
Oil type:
Multipurpose gear oil API GL-4 or GL-5
Recommended Oil Viscosity:
SAE 75W-90 or 80W-90
Transfer case:
Oil cpacity, qt. (Imp. qt., liter)
1.7 (1.4, 1.6)
Oil Type:
Multipurpose gear oil API GL-4 or GL-5
Recommended oil viscosity:
SAE 75W-90 or 80W-90
I used the Severe Gear stuff since I off-road the crap out of my rig and take it camping/fishing/etc every weekend.

That has got to be the worst description of a repair ever but I think you know what I mean.

I never have done a flush. I just put the rig on the highway and got everything up to operating temps then as soon as I got turned around and back to the house I pullled every drain plug on it and let it drain for a while. I have several oil catch pans so it goes pretty quick.
